Difference between birding and bird watching?

Definitely true and very common here in the US.

    American Birding Association

A very good choice for the new president. Jeff is well respected in the birding community. Let's hope the ABA's glory years are yet to come.

    Hand Held GPS for Birding

Be wary of the built in compass. I've yet to see a GPSr that has a compass that doesn't need to be frequently re-calibrated. And then the calibration isn't always correct. If you need accurate compass readings, get a real magnetic compass.

    Another new NA field guide

Richard Crossley spoke at a local nature festival last night. He had more shots in his presentation and he explained his reasons for the design. He didn't mention a release date but it sounds like the project is much further along than people would have guessed. It looks interesting but I...

    bird song, Augusta

CBS and the PGA had to come clean a few years ago about adding bird calls when a birder picked up an out of range bird call on a telecast. IIRC, it was a Canyon or Cactus Wren on the east coast. I tuned in for about 10 minutes this past Sunday and noticed a loud Carolina Wren and Northern...

US vs Europe field guides (rant)

A lot of NA birders who are familiar with Collins share your frustration. We have some guides that have better art than Collins, some have better text, and some have better maps. But none are as good as Collins. There is a great opportunity for someone to create a superior NA field guide.

    How to waterproof leather boot?

For all leather boots, I prefer Sno-Seal. That stuff is great. For leather and fabric boots, some of the Nikwax products are a better choice.

Some people really should know better

I know a local foursome of birders who have been banned from two different preserves for bad behavior. In one preserve they repeatedly ignored signs barring off trail hiking and picked wildflowers. In another they were caught throwing stones at birds trying to get them to flush for better...

    swarovision EL

I'll skip all the theory and speak up as someone who has actually used them in the field. I spent all weekend birding. These are amazing binoculars and I'm very happy with them. Was the rolling globe effect noticeable? Only on one occasion. I was at a site where I had a clear view of the...

    Angry Angler!

So clearly there isn't a single obsessive fisherman anywhere in the UK? I used to work for Mercury Marine in Fond du Lac, WI. They make outboard boat engines. The VP of Sales used to joke that their best customer was a 30/30/30. $30,000 boat towed by a $30,000 truck parked in front of a...

    Recommendations: Brownsville, TX area

I'm in Texas right now and I've been to both Santa Ana and Bentsen a couple of times in the last 10 days. You can't go wrong at either location. The Green Jays and Plain Chachalacas are more abundant in Bentsen if that's what you're after and it has pretty good blinds but Masked Duck and...

    Chics or dudes

Locally it seems the young birders are mostly male but that changes as you look at older generations and more women become involved. Under 20 birders are 80+% male. The 35-45 range is about 60/40. The 60 to 80 group is about 50/50. The over 80 crowd is mostly women, probably because they are...

    Strange birdwatching location

There are many cemeteries here in the US that have organized bird walks. One of the local cemeteries even has owl hikes well after normal closing hours. As Pete suggested, just keep a respectful distance from mourners.

    Eastern US guide questions

In over two decades of birding I've never heard it argued that a field guide is meant for use at home and not in the field. Then what is a "desk reference"? The overwhelming majority of birders I meet around my home territory must be "lazy" as they all seem to carry a field guide, Sibley...

Specimens - why still the need?

Lot's of fun stuff while I was at the office. Thanks for the definitions Richard. They are correct. The anti-collectors will normally not change their minds. Neither will those in favor of collecting. There are always examples of spurious studies, such as the parrots. However, all of the...

Popularity of birding around the world

Good point. One thing to consider is the number of local alternatives for US birders. Every state has at least one list-serve, some have several. There are also a couple of nationwide list-serves. There are also a host of regional and local forums and message boards. Birdforum is one of 5...
