    Very late to the party, but I have both. The ultravid has noticeably better edge performance than the trinovid, and has much less pincushion as well. Frankly, I was surprised at how much better the ultravid performs, not a small difference.

    Protect the front lens with a filter?

    I use a Schneider Kreuznach circular polarizer, 1/4 wave minimum, Schott glass, interferometer and spectrophotometer tested. It cuts the glare and protects the glass. I use B+W MRC UV filters or circular polarizers on my L lenses as well.

    Leica 10x25 Ultravid objective lens coatings

    A bit of oil (eyelash oil, for instance) on the glass, when wiped over the surface, can change its apparent color. Use a good lens cleaning solution like Kodak or Zeiss and see if that changes the color. I had the same problem on my Leicas, and it wouldn't come off with any of the usual...

    Trinovid lens coating

    I have the 8x20 Trin and the 8x20 Ultravid, and there is a significant difference in the image that cannot be due to coatings. The Ultravid has much better edge sharpness and much less pincushion. Can't say about the others, haven't had them side by side yet.
