    Show me the Monet anyone?

Is anyone else here watching 'Show me the Monet' on BBC2 early evenings? (iplayer in my case). The programme makers have tried to make it into some kind of xfactor-come-Dragons den nonsense which doesn't really work, but it has been fascinating me all week. There have only been two pieces of...

    Bird art inspired Christmas pressie

Not sure where this belongs but, since it's an artist's blog, I thought here would do. Subtle birding joke boxers... http://juliezickefoose.blogspot.com/ Made me smirk once I got the joke. Mike

    American gallery

Hi folks, Well worth checking out this site; http://www.blauveltmuseum.com/ Go to the list of artists and enjoy. Very much a reflection of the American market with lots of huntin', shootin', fishin' type stuff but there are plenty of gems in there, Manfred Schatz for example. Mike

    What's a bee doing when...

...it flies in circles and settles on a patch of recently disturbed earth, then buries itself, re-emerges, flies off, returns and repeats the process six or seven times? A friend has asked and I'm not sure of the answer. The bee in question was a 'bumble bee' type with a red rear end. My friend...

    Nikon UR-E20

Anybody know if this adapter is in stock anywhere in Europe? Or any reliable and not ridiculously overpriced supplier overseas prepared to deliver to the UK? I'm off on holiday mid august so really want to get hold of one of these ASAP. Help appreciated, thanks Mike

    Help! There's too much choice

Hi All, I'm currently using the following set-up; Kowa 822, 20x eyepiece, Nikon 990, LCE adapter (tube type with 3 nylon screws for the eyepiece and a screw thread to attach it to the camera). I keep the camera permanently fixed to the eyepiece with the adapter and, whenever I want to digiscope...

    Andrew Stock and SWALA

Well I thought the Andrew Stock exhibition was a crackin' show. I went back four or five times and was impressed each time. So, it seems, were the buying public, I would say 80% or more of the work on show had sold by yesterday lunchtime. Andrew Stock is very much a wildlife artist in the old...

    Yaffingale

I have received the following query from my wife's stepmother and was wondering if anyone here could solve the puzzle. 'I am reading an older book written by an English author, and reference is made to a yaffingale. The references I find say both European Green Woodpecker and Nightingale...

    Mike's conservatory

Well everyone else has got a thread of their own so I thought I'd start one for 2008. I'll incorporate my sketchbook here too. So the first painting of the year has been started from sketches made in the dying days of 2007. This snoozing owl was too good to resist. I've flipped him and I wanted...

Rough legged or common? Kent UK

A couple of weeks ago on Elmley reserve I spotted this buteo and snapped a few ref shots. I wasn't even sure at first that I didn't have a fair sized, blonde falcon in the scope, it was tricky to get a focus because of the heat haze (!) rising from the ground. As it took off I caught a glimpse...

    Bateman exhibition

Came across this and thought it may be of interest to some: http://www.mcmichael.com/exhibitions/robertbateman/index.cfm Scroll down for a video 'interview' but beware, some of the worst cheesy guitar I think I've ever heard! Oh, and it looks like Mr Bateman has lost one of his front teeth...

    How much do you abandon?

I'm feeling a little down at the moment, every painting I do seems to get a little way in and then I decide it's crap and abandon it. I had a little think and currently I have; A wren, a little owl, some hares, a barn owl/landscape, a pheasant/landscape, goldfinches, another little owl, snipe...

    Michael Warren exhibition

Is it just me, or does anyone else think Michael Warren is a very, very clever man? http://www.wildlifeartgallery.com/pages/wildlife_artists/mike_warren1.html Check out the marsh warbler, the shape of the bird is perfectly echoed by the shapes in the twigs and leaves. Or the jack snipe, the...

    Art or wildlife art?

What is it to you that defines 'Wildlife art'? Prompted by Jomo's comments and Nick's SWLA thread I thought I'd try to get some peoples' opinions on a question that has intrigued me for a long time. I am quite happy to refer to myself as a 'wildlife artist'. I'm not sure though whether that...

Can someone ID this little beauty please (UK)

Hi All, Found this little beauty on my windowsill. I guess it's some kind of wasp or possibly sawfly but my limited ID book doesn't have it. Could somebody ID it for me please? I'd also guess the name includes 'orange banded/tailed too! Woody

    Stolen Artwork!

Sorry to report that some toe-rag has stolen two of my paintings from the Birds! Birds! Birds! gallery in Faversham. They are small pieces (6"x4") so the worm was able to remove them from the wall during a preview evening and make off at speed. If anybody sees these two paintings could...

    Crow in a trap

Not sure if this is the right place but here goes anyway. I spotted this on the RSPB reserve at Elmley. I'm not a sloppy, sentimental type, but is this common practice on RSPB land? To the left of the pic is a GBBG(?) checking out the captive. Woody
