    Mallards eating other birds

I witnessed a female mallard try and drown a robin today before seagulls got a hold of it and tried to kill it by dropping it. I managed to get it away from them but it passed away in my hands anyway, probably from the shock :( I'm not surprised at the gulls, but is this normal for ducks? We do...

Scotland - Loch Lomond - Manky Mallard? Hybrid?

Two very large ducks have appeared in my village - they have mostly Mallard markings but are much bigger (about double the size) and have a different bodyshape to Mallards. I'm wondering if they're crossed with another species? The only other species ducks on the river are Muscovy Ducks and...

    Mallard Hybrid?

I'm thinking this might be a Mallard Muscovy Duck hybrid? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v319/sueKay/_DSC0899_zpse51d0190.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v319/sueKay/_DSC0903_zpscbb8e39a.jpg It was one of two drakes that were much larger than regular Mallards. The other one had...

Swan trying to remove leg ring

I saw a mute swan today and while she was washing her feathers, she kept going back to her leg and biting at the ring and pulling on it when she could get purchase. She was being quite rough about it as if she were angry or frustrated. I've never seen a Swan do this to their leg rings before...

    Redwing Migration

Hi all, I was wondering when Redwings usually migrate? I've just moved to Glasgow, and I've noticed one solitary Redwing at the same little bit of roadside greenery on several occasions. He seems to be in the company of two Song Thrushes but I've not seen any other Redwings. I think it's...

Birds of Prey Stolen from Loch Lomond Centre

Hi there, I don't know if this is the right place to post this (if not, my apologies and could a moderator put it where it's meant to be) but I feel compelled to. Two Harris and one Red-Tailed Hawks have been stolen from the Loch Lomond Bird of Prey Centre. They were stolen in the early hours...

    Odd Duck/Goose in central Scotland

Hi there, I've seen a type of bird in a river near my home that I've never seen before. It's very much like a shelduck, as it has a pink beak, and clearly defined markings, but it has a completely black back with no white present on the wings, and a shorter neck. I have absolutely no idea...

    Egyptian Geese in Scotland

Hi there! (note - newbie...so I don't know if this is the right place for this) I live at Loch Lomond, and a few days ago noticed three geese that I'd never seen before in the river of my village. Did some research and it turns out they're Egyptian Geese. Thing is...According to the RPSB...
