    Shieldbugs.

This turned up on the wall of my house this morning. If my ID is right it's a middle to late instar of the Sloe/Hairy Shieldbug. Not much bigger than a Ladybird and nothing like as bright. Like a lot of the previous posters, I just love Shieldbugs. The best source of info I've found so far, are...

    Bushnell Elite ED 10x42 Review

Hi Kimball, Many thanks for your reply; it's appreciated. I hear what you're saying about the 8x, but suspect there's a greater depth of field with my Nikons than the 10x Bushnells? And do like the 'all in focus' view. Would also appreciate your comment on this aspect. Cheers Max

Does Nikon EDG series have repellent lens coatings?

Only 90%? Bushnell are claiming 99.7% in their new Elite ED's with RainGuard HD coatings. Max

    Bushnell Elite ED 10x42 Review

Hi Kimball, I've been reading this thread with great interest, and have a question you may be able to answer. I have a pair of Nikon 8x32 HG's (not the L's) and was wondering if I'd gain anything with the Elite 8x42 HD's? I didn't ever expect to find a better bin than this Nikon, but I'm...

Hi Nick Many thanks for that! I see that it's rated common, but I've never seen one before; odd. Cheers Max

    ID Fungi please?

A friend sent me this pic to see if I could identify it; I can't! I've looked through three fungi books I have, without success. Any help appreciated. Cheers Max

    7x42 Ultralite Porro

Hi Brock, you could well be right! I'll have another look tomorrow. Yes, I did get the 'baffling' pun, as I'm principally an astronomer these days. Due to a combination of old age and ill health, my days of walking across fields, heath and shore, are gone. Cheers Max

    7x42 Ultralite Porro

Hi Frank, I'm not sure what you mean by field stop in this context. I can't look again at the moment, because it's dark! Cheers Max

    7x42 Ultralite Porro

Hi all, I've just received a pair of the above bins, which I bought off the UK bay. They're an odd combination of virtues. I terms of resolution and clarity, they are superb, the downside is the restricted field of view. Another odd thing, that I've not seen on any other bin I've looked through...

    Interesting Swift Model

OK, I've done some more testing today in sunshine (!) and they're even better. However, checking edge to edge they're not so good, but on the bright side, that's never worried me. What they'll be like for stargazing I'm still interested to see. So, for birding, at least for certain situations...

    Interesting Swift Model

Hi Ed, Clearly a misunderstanding of terms. In the picture you've reproduced, what I see is a red 'badge'. I have that, and yet on the bottom of the hinge I have a small gold dome - dot. My prisms are BaK 7's I think. Cheers Max

    Interesting Swift Model

Hi Ed, Very many thanks for this extra info. This 'red dot' or in my case 'gold dot', does it have any significance, or is it purely for decoration? Yes, I'll certainly be keeping these! Thanks Max

    Interesting Swift Model

Hi Simon, No, it appears they're BaK7's. But regardless of that, I'm still impressed! Being principally an astronomer these days, due to ill health preventing me from doing much walking, I can't wait to get these under the stars and star test them. That will be a big indicator of quality and...

    Interesting Swift Model

Ranger 10x50's Having just found this thread I'd like to bring it alive again! I'm going to copy and paste a report I've just put on CN, with a link to pics. Please answer either here or there. Obviously non CN members will find it easier to answer here. I will watch both sites. Hi All! I just...

Historical Review of Swift 804 Audubon Binoculars

Hi All, OK, they have arrived and the condition is good. The only blemish is a nasty knock on the focussing wheel. Looking through them the 'wrong' way they appear to be very clean internally with no fungus present. But, there appears to be a minor mark like a short scratch on the left prism...

Historical Review of Swift 804 Audubon Binoculars

Hi Ed, I have been informed that this pair of bins has been posted and will be here either today or tomorrow. I will gladly take piccies. Do you want me to post them here, or send them to you privately? If privately send me your email address via PM. I am completely intrigued by this series of...
