North Norfolk coast - Last week of March

Thanks Roger and Darren Staying at the White Horse in Brancaster Staith so sounds like it will be nice to leave the car for a change and just walk from the Hotel. Any ideas if a problem re time of year - i.e. will the wintering birds have left and the summer migrants not yet have...

North Norfolk coast - Last week of March

Managed to get a week off work have decided to spend 4 days staying at Brancaster Staith (last week in March) As relative beginner birdwatchers we would welcome advice on how to get the most out of 4 days birding in this area. Is this even a good time of year to visit? What especially...

    Wheldrake Ings

My wife and I recently joined Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and decided on Sunday morning to visit Wheldrake Ings Nature reserve. After a very pleasant walk in the November sunshine we suddenly realised how quiet it was. As we approached the hides we suddenly realised why - No water in any of...

    Fairburn Ings RSPB

Spent an excellent afternoon at Fairburn Ings yesterday. Immediatley after a couple of heavy squally showers the sun came out and had a lovely walk in the woodland area where recorded Willow Tit - (the differences between Marsh Tit were pointed out to me!) and then an hour or so in the...

    Pipits

Great views yesterday of 3 Water Pipits close to hide at RSPB Fairburn Ings in West Yorkshire. Although not a first for me - this was the best view I have ever had and able to sort clearly from Rock Pipit etc. Nice when you are not alone and experts confirm your opinion all the same!! Cheers

Bluetail I have been trying to attract Goldfinches to my garden with little success - saw one for a very brief visit but it did not feed from the niger seed feeder (been up now for 6-8 weeks) Any tips on placement etc would be welcome. (I get Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Sparrow, Tree Sparrow...

    Canon G5

Al Got to confess - I had no idea about the size of the Leica eyepiece matching the canon lens adapter when I bought the scope! Just decided to get the scope as it seemed to fit my criteria from a viewing perspective. Thought that I would spend some time improving my birding skills before...

    Basic bird feeding questions

Hi all Buying in Bulk (25 kilo sacks) from seed merchants is a real money saver. I get mixed wild bird seed for £7.40 + vat for 25kg sacks. House Sparrows Blue, Coal and Great Tit Greenfinch, Goldfinch and Chaffinch Robin and Collared Dove All seem to love it and feed in turn (except the...

    Leica 62 APO

Thanks for the responses re ever Leica ready case - Unfortunatley I have tried all those dealers mentioned and all are out of stock at the moment. Problem is that Leica uk are out also (and have been for months apparantly) so unless a dealer has one stuck away in a cupboard somewhere I will...

    Leica 62 APO

I too bought APO 62 angled at the weekend. Been testing and deliberating for weeks and decided on bargain priced APO 77 - until last minute! - really think smaller size and weight of 62 will mean more use and therefore better value in the long run - 99% of image quality of 77. I preferred the...

    Leica 8x32 versus 10x32

Swaro 8x32 are a bit brighter and slightly wider fov than Leica's. However - that was not my reason for buying them - in the end I found them more pleasant to use (and carry) and thats why I bought them. Are they worth £200 more than the Leicas? - this depends entirely on your own judgement of...

    Lake District Holiday

P Thanks for that - Did try to get one - seems to be difficult to get hold of - could have purchased on-line but left it too late - My local RSPB has every WTW but Cumbria - hence the post. Not to worry - will take a look at Brockhole Visitor centre when I get there tomorrow or just play it...

    Leica 8x32 versus 10x32

By way of info - Swaro 8x32 same price as 8.5x42 (£789) if you shop around or £180 more than best price Leica 8x32bn - but in my opinion worth the extra for extreme lightweight, slightly better optical quality and ease of use for spectacle wearers i.e. me! The way the leica loan scheme works...

    Leica 8x32 versus 10x32

Having spent ages deliberating over new Leica and Swaro bins recently I went for the Swaro 8x32 EL. Why not give these a try - miles lighter than the Leica 8x32 and 99% of the Swaro 8.5x42 sharpness and brightness (+ quicker focussing and a larger field of view) Whatever you decide one thing I...

    New Bins - 8.5 x 42 or 8 x 32

Thanks for all the responses. Checked out both side by side (again!) and decided that the reduction in brightness and sharpness was so very small..... - the size and weight of the 8x32 's make them the best choice for me... So I bought em from Bass & Bligh in Harrogate. Great service from...
