Twitching by numbers - Book only available on Amazon

I think you already know the answer to that. If it were crass enough then yes, certain people would class it as humour.

Warbler sized Garden bird ID needed Crewkerne Somerset UK

How about a goldfinch seen badly? Would explain the song.

Sony RX10 1V the new boy.

Any idea how robust the camera is? Most of my birding now takes place after a run along the Mersey Estuary, my canon set up 7D and 100-400 (both mk1) stays at home and I take a small pair of bins. It's good for most things but I did have a possible rarity a couple of months back that I probably...

Willow Tits in Britain - inbreeding & partial albininism

Not willow tit but I remember seeing a tree sparrow that was the last of a metapopulation of about 200 birds. It was an all sandy coloured affair, pretty much a tree sparrow in desert camouflage.

After shoots they can get very spooked and can tend to turn up in odd places.

    monarchs

Thanks for the hilarious banter. I'll contact BBC3, they're always on the look out for the next 'two pints of lager' or Lee Nelson.

Apologies for posting in rare birds section but this is where the most likely monarch finders will hang around. Any on scilly or anywhere else yet?

Sparrowhawks responsible for House Sparrow decline says scientist

Thanks Christopher, I really think there may be something in the panel fence thing, posibly not for house sparrow in particular but for garden birds in general. Rather than dive into a hedge to avoid predators, birds have to take an 'up and over' route which would certainly play into the hands...

Sparrowhawks responsible for House Sparrow decline says scientist

Christopher, when you say that changes in the urban environment do not bear scrutiny, do you mean that these factors have been scientifically investigated and found to be of no significance or that there is not a scientifically rigorous way of investigating these factors? If the answer to this...

Sparrowhawks responsible for House Sparrow decline says scientist

Has there been any research on the affects of panel fencing on birds in the urban environment? Back in the 1970's I recall that just about every garden would have a decent (usually privet) hedge. Since the 1980's many of these have been replaced by the easy to manage panel fence. These offer A)...

    Day tripping Borneo Rainforest Lodge

Thanks again Mr Marsh Tern, starting to feel a lot more positive after the info suplied by all on this thread. Does anybody have an up to date email address for Mr Chong? A friend has been trying him for a couple of weeks with no reply so far.

    Day tripping Borneo Rainforest Lodge

Brilliant. Thanks for all the help. Most trip reports seem to have a downer on DVFC, I don't mind a bit of hard work if the rewards are there. Thanks again.

    Day tripping Borneo Rainforest Lodge

Anyone know if it's possible to day trip BRL whilst staying elsewhere? £700 for a couple of days birding is way beyond my budget, wouldn't mind having a look around though as it sounds more productive than the field centre.

    Nancy's Logbooks

Great story that, shows what a lovely lady Nancy was. Roy Taylor to my knowledge was last seen in the south Pennines/Peak District helping the RSPB to save twite. Interesting to hear the lament of Scilly not being the same. You'd need lots of fingers to count the common migrants this year, pied...

Didn't get past the back door!

That's a good day out considering you stayed in. I remember when I lived in a house overlooking Radipole Lake and was planning to go birding. Ended up staying in listening to the match and having a couple of cups of coffee. 9 little egrets, 2 spoonbill, 20 scaup, 8 med gulls and a bittern...

    Moorhen and coot territorial flights

This was prompted by the oystercatcher thread. Anybody else hear either of these birds performing territorial flights on spring nights? Moorhen regularly fly around giving a 'kek-kek-kek' call, often hundreds of metres from water. Coot do a similar kind of thing although the call is similar to...

    What irrates you when birding!

Birding from the roadsides in Ecuador is really frustrating as the drivers of the more than frequent buses always insist on tooting their horns as they pass you.

    Bird Jokes!

Not a bird joke but here goes. A tortoise is walking across the garden when he gets mugged by a snail. Later on the police arrive and ask if he got a good look at his attacker. The tortoise says, 'no, it all happened so fast.'
