    Smashing Dipper shot

There's regularly a Dipper on the stream near where I work. I wish I could get a view of it that was that good...!

    My first trip

It's less than a year since I made my first dedicated bird watching trip. I can still remember the feeling of satisfaction I got identifying my first 'out of the ordinary' bird (Black Tailed Godwit). I still get that feeling every time I see a bird for the first time today. I hope I always will. :)

Saw my first (and so far only) tree creeper earlier this year. I was well pleased!

    North West Bank Holiday Birding

With the wife away for a few days, I managed to spend pretty much a full day birding at some of my favourite spots here in the North West. Fist stop, Martin Mere, where amongst other things there were: 2 Avocets - highlight of my day, as they're birds I've never seen before. Oystercatchers...

    Our wives have hooters

From the title, I was hoping for a much more exciting thread than this...!

    A Trip to Martin-Mere.

You can't beat Martin Mere for a good selection of birds. Never had a bad day there. I saw the Red Breasted Goose a month or so back, which I was quite pleased about! Last visited between Christmas & New year, and was pleased to see the Cormorants, one of my favourite birds. Weather permitting...

Bird Clubs are they for you?

Being new to bird watching, part of me thinks it would be a good idea to join a club, to further my knowledge, and meet like minded people. But I don't know - I guess once you join a group, things can become a little rigid. Fixed times for meetings, set times for trips out, that sort of thing. I...

    Martin Mere 9-11-03

Bill, Yeah, the swan feeding is spectacular. Worth the visit just to see that! I'll be at the bird fair this weekend too, probably Sunday, although, as you say, there's not been too much mention of what's going on this year. That's not too much of a problem though, as I haven't got any money to...

Good question Edward! I have no idea, but I'm sure that someone out there will be able to tell us...!

Whooper Swans take first prize - never seen so many swans in my life, let alone all gathered together on one place! Impossible to count them all, but there were hundreds, if not thousands. The noise was incredible. Still plenty of Pink Foot geese too, but not near the numbers that were there a...

Hi Bill, Yeah, my wife comes from that exotic little place called Billinge! Not been to Martin Mere for about 3 weeks or so, but we should be there again this Sunday. Looking forward to seeing all the Pinkfeet & Whooper Swans that have arrived over the past few weeks. Once the new land is...

Sounds great - I'll look forward to seeing it when it gets released on DVD in the UK.

    Winged Migration

Has anyone out there seen the film Winged Migration? I saw it reviewed on television a couple of months ago, but haven't heard anything about it since. The film is all about birds migration (surprise surprise), but the filming looks superb, getting right in there with the birds as they fly...

Thanks for the welcome folks! Christine, I dig Jazz, mainly John Coltrane & Miles Davis, but the name is from my chosen instrument - the Fender Jazz Bass. :)

    Favourite Bird?

Ducks & geese for me - got a soft spot for shellducks. And I think that the poor old Heron gets a rough deal a lot of the time - give him a break!

    Pink-feet are back!

I was at Martin Mere a couple of weekends ago, and there had to be at least 2,000 Pinkfeet on the mere. Somewhere amongst them, there was a Red Breasted Goose, seen by a couple of people, but sadly not by me! Being new to bird watching, the sight & sound of so many birds in one place at the same...

Hello! My first visit here - great site. I've been interested in birds for years, but it's only recently that I've actually made the effort to get out there and learn more about them. Living in the North West of England means that I have easy access to the fantastic Martin Mere, which is where I...
