    Birds without binoculars, your list

Members of the Knutsford Ornithological Society who forget their bins automatically qualify for membership of the "Knutsford None Optical Birdwatching Society" or Knobs. In such circumstances these individuals are said to be out "knobbing" and any bird identified without the benefit of optical...

    Jizz...?

I own a copy of Thomas Coward's book "Bird haunts and Nature Memories" first published in 1922. He devotes a full chapter to "JIZZ" and describes it thus - "if we are walking on the road and see, far ahead, someone whom we recognise although we can neither distinguish features nor particular...

Spring is just around the corner and the Knutsford Ornithological Society invites you to enter our 8th. annual Sand Martin competition. The idea is to predict the time and date the first returning bird will be recorded over Tatton Mere, our own "local patch". Data from the past 15 years are...

We have seen them on a number of occassions this Winter from the screen overlooking the Coward Memorial Reedbed. I believe one was seen today (12th.) on Marbury Lane, near the brine overflow. This is where a pair were seen many times last Spring. Ask at the information centre for directions...

    Thoughts on Pyser?

I've had a pair of these for about 12 months now. They're lasting well, I normally ruin my binocs through using them in the rain, but these are waterproof and may last for some years! I needed to set the eye cups at an intermediate setting but found they moved, so I used small elastic bands to...

    Any info on 'tetrad' studies?

I don't know of anyone else who concentrates on a single tetrad, but in Yorkshire there's a group that is dedicated to a single 10K square (SK58) This is probably as close as you'll get! http://www.sk58.freeserve.co.uk/ Tony Usher http://www.10X50.com

    Aurora

Yes and it may well be better than last night! There's already plenty of activity on the Amateur Radio frequencies as it's possible to "bounce" your vhf signals off the auroral curtain (8:07pm). Fortunately the weather has no effect on this activity, but I believe it's going to be too cloudy...

    Aurora

There's a strong aurora taking place at the moment (9:50pm). It's giving a good display of the Northern Lights in Scotland but we can't see anything here in Cheshire because of cloud cover. Anyone else seeing much of a display? Tony http://www.10X50.com
