What Brought You To Be a Birder?

I started really watching after being laid up following an opperation when all I could do was look out the window for weeks and months. Some best buy bins were followed by a field guide and an increasing recovery led me out in to the field and better health. That must have been ten years or so...

    Unusual Hen harrier behaviour, Orkney.

The female in question is likley the breeding female from that area. This track in the heather is a right of way and regularly walked by dog walkers. I wondered if it was learned behavoiur or just an opertunistic occurence. It may have seen mippits going up from the distance and been drawn by...

    Unusual Hen harrier behaviour, Orkney.

I saw something I have never seen before tonight. As I was coming away from Russadale quarry I had the dog running on a right good bit in front and was messing about in the heather just off the track. A hen harrier came over Chris's house down the field and over the heather. It made for the dog...

    Waxwing invasion 2012/13

Thats interesting Andrew, a lot of our birds are young ones as well. I dont think the amount of birds is unusualy heavy this year (yet). The other factor that i would have expected to be pushing them in our direction would be the weather and that does not seem to be that extreme over the last...

    Waxwing invasion 2012/13

They have been coming and going in our garden for the last few days, my rugosa is trashed and they are falling on apples as soon as they go out. The apples go straight through them and in to the sparrows which i havent seen before!! The few reports i can find on the web point to the berry crop...

    Waxwings

There seems to be good numbers here hovering up what ever they can find. They have beaten the redwings to a lot of it this year. I would love to know how the scandinavian berry crop is. That would help give a clue about the potential influx !!

    Red Grouse population- unmanaged land

If the moorland managment for comercial grouse and deer stopped the hills of Scotland would look very different in ten, twenty, thirty years. The biodiversity would re establish and bloom and the hills would look much the same in places but be very diferent places to stand in!! Its a shame...

    Red Grouse population- unmanaged land

In Orkney we have a lot of heather. There are no shooting estates for the comercial exploitation of grouse. Some of the heather is managed by the RSPB and a little is still cut for peat but the practice has dropped away over the last 40 years. Some is grazed in the summer and improves the...
