    The P1000 is big

A couple of recent images from my P1000. These were both taken at full zoom with a camera on a support.

83x anyone? The new Nikon P900

Resurrecting this thread :-) Since this thread appears to have little activity, I thought I'd resurrect it by adding an image taken with my P900 several weeks ago. Distance was about 100 yards, and once again, this remarkable camera delivered the goods!

Canon EF 600mm f/4 DO BR lens

I sincerely doubt the "mythical" 600mm DO will be announced in 2017, and I suspect it may be more like 2018, if at all. It would likely be a popular albeit very expensive lens, with cost estimates in USD between $15-20K. There's currently a thread in the Canon forum on the Fred Miranda site...

Struggling to lock-on to birds with Canon 600mm USM IS L

I shoot BIF with a 500mm f4L IS + a 1.4x converter frequently, and my guess is that "atmospherics" played a large role in the softness of the images. Mid-day is one of the worst times because the heat rising up from the ground will create focusing issues. That said, my settings under similar...

Best DSLR value for money body+lens combo?

The 100-400 mk 2 is an exceptionally sharp lens, and will likely shine on almost any camera body you can afford. An advantage the new lens has over the older lens is that it takes a 1.4x III teleconverter giving you a very good range of 140-560mm, albeit at f8. Although a little long in the...

Current best bridge camera for birds

I have a Nikon P900, and my wife has an SX40HS. Images from the P900 are decent up to about 1400mm equivalent in decent atmospheric conditions but not much further than that. And I find it difficult to get good sharp shots hand-held beyond that 1400mm mark... The SX40 although quite a few years...

83x anyone? The new Nikon P900

My wife has the SX40HS and in my opinion it's a damn fine camera! She has taken it to Alaska, Kenya, Namibia, and Australia and brought back some excellent images, some even rivaling what I get with my heavier and bulkier DSLR & lenses. That "old" technology still works quite nicely. All that...

Canon 7d Mark 2 advice please

I've been shooting with 1D Mark IV's since the day they announced it and it's still one of my primary camera bodies. It virtually lives on my 500mm f4L IS II +1.4x, and it continues to deliver incredible images... That said, I picked up a 7DII several years ago to get a tad more reach and I've...

83x anyone? The new Nikon P900

Well, I have several DSLRs, and several very sharp long telephotos but the lightest combination I can carry to get DSLR results is about 6 lbs. My P900 weighs considerably less, and takes acceptable images for those times when carrying my bigger rigs is just not feasible. For me, the P900 is an...

    Feeder cam?

There's a company who makes feeder cams: http://www.wingscapes.com/products/cameras but I suspect you are looking for something more like a direct feed video camera. You might consider checking out these folks: http://www.songbirdgarden.com/store/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=14810 So far as I...

Canon 300 2.8 for Birds in Flight?

Everyone has their own preferences for gear, and a lot of depends on what they prefer to shoot... I enjoy shooting raptors and eagles which are quite a bit slower than swifts and my gear of choice is a 1D Mark IV and a 7D Mark II. My 500mm f4 + 1.4x essentially live on a not-really-portable...

WHat is causing this with my lense?

It would help to know what lens and what camera, and what you were focused on. Metering setting would be helpful as well. The focus point on slow lenses (a lens with a minimum aperture of f5.6 would be considered a slow lens) is extremely shallow. But it would also be helpful to know whether you...

    is 600mm or the 500mm f4 II worth upgrading from 400 f5.6?

Even though the series 2 500 and 600 are less weight than the series 2 versions, they are still heavy, and considerably bulky... A LOT bulkier than your 400/5.6... I've been shooting with a 500 now for about 10 years, and adore it... the lens with and without a 1.4x converter is tack sharp. I...

    7D ll or 100-400 ll

I have both the new 100-400 (vII) and the 7DII... Without question, buy the lens first! When you can afford it, buy the camera body or hunt around for a pre-owned one. Once you have the new camera body AND the lens, save up for a 1.4x vIII Canon converter! The 100-400vII + the Canon 1.4x III is...

    7D2. LCD screen

I assume you're talking about the internal camera focusing screen. It sounds to me that somehow the screen itself popped out from the retaining frame. Because the focusing screen assembly is very delicate, I might suggest you take your camera to a camera store where they've likely seen this...

Lack of hummingbirds in PA this year?

For the first time in my many years of watching numerous daily visits of ruby-throated hummingbirds to my yard, 2016 has definitely been different. The quantity of hummingbirds is way down so far this spring, and I don't recall anything like this in the past decade or so... Can anyone explain it?

    Canon EF400MM F/4 DO IS

Not anymore... I sold my version 1 lens about a year ago. It performed well under bright conditions but in low-light, not so much. I understand that the version 2 one is considerably sharper than the older one, and does much better in low light conditions...

    Remote for Nikon P900!

This is a nice feature but it would be better if the camera would function in other areas besides Auto... guess I'm asking a lot from Nikon.

83x anyone? The new Nikon P900

I think it's unlikely and/or impossible for Nikon to add Raw to the P900. Adding Raw is not just a firmware update; they'd need to address the extra processing required in the electronics. Cameras which do record in Raw have additional circuitry on the motherboard plus a heavier duty power...

Canon 100-400 Mk11 replacement lens foot

Yes, I replaced mine with a Kirk foot, #LP-61! Obviously, it's no longer removable, but it's a bit longer.

    canon foot

I've always replaced my original Canon lens "feet" with aftermarket ones from either Really Right Stuff or Kirk. The key, as others have said, is to use the correct Allen wrench, and to take your time doing it. There's no reason to use any Loctite or similar substance as I've found that the...

83x anyone? The new Nikon P900

Your images are excellent, and indicative of just how good the P900 is. When I first got my P900, I put a UV filter on the front but found out quite quickly that the AF didn't focus properly with it mounted. I took it off and have never had a problem since. I have a feeling that the filter...

83x anyone? The new Nikon P900

Thank you for your kind words! I do have an album on my Flickr page specifically for images created with the P900 but the majority of my images have been created with gear a lot less portable...
