    looking for owls and woodpeckers

Czech Rep. village between Susice and Strakonice on the edge of Sumava was again our base for a cold ( down to -10) and unusually showery - a few snowflakes included - couple of weeks in mid April. I would get a few days/ half days of birding and wanted to continue looking for birds within an...

    portugal mira

Hi All, We're off to Algarve for last week of feb and wondered if there were any 'must see' spots at that time of year. In particular is there a 'best' spot to wait and watch in the Mira river valley - SW Alentejo? Are there still eagle owls there? Any hints and tips very gratefully received...

We're off to Alentejo southwest and vicenta national park in 4 weeks time! I just wondered whether the Eagle Owls listed in wikipedia as being there are still likely to be around? I heard from a friend that there is now shooting there on thursdays and sundays! Any particularly good spots we...

    cape st vincent

A pal who is now camping there reports 600+ griffon vultures 50 metres over his head in waves going west (1 ST Eagle caught up in the flight). He asked me what was going on and I to my shame haven't a clue. I wondered if any of our local experts would have an idea? Den

    Unusual buzzard Cz Republic July

another strange buzz - juv?. Through the binos it was bigger and more direct non rocking flight than 2 juv 'normal' com buzzes nearby. Immediate impression was rough leg but obv wildly out of season here. fine bars on tail good for com and longleg (dark morph but why then light mantle??)...

    Czech Rep bird call

Sorry no recording but some suggestions of possibilities would be very gratefully received so I can try them on X-Canto. Listening for quails in long grass/cereal fields and heard single clear shortish note (reminiscent of thin weak pygmy owl) repeated in slow (maybe a second between them)...

    Breeding Great White Egret

My last day out before grandchildren arrived in Sumava produced only a couple of GWEs but recently there have been up to 120 or so around Sedlec (CB). My question for the more knowledgeable is 'how many does it take to provide critical mass for a breeding colony?' Some local birders seem to...

    sumava cz raptors etc

Thunderstorms and hail today so remembering yesterdays jaunt to the local white tailed eagles between Blatna and Horazdovice and another pair about 10 ks east of Strakonice. Have to be a bit more circumspect about nests for these birds than areas for black woodies - there were some poisoning...

    Sumava Cz

Went to look for Grey headed wpeckers in a beech wood on a pointy hill (Chlumska) near local town Klatovy. 30 degrees in the sun so glad to be under these beautiful old trees. Paths good for wheelchair - contouring round the hill about half way up rather than going for the summit! At least 5...

Black Wpeckers with tears in their eyes ?

Anyone know if there are any studies explaining why Black Woodpeckers seem to have tear/arrow shaped pupils? We saw loads around the house this Easter and managed some good close views and it was clear at least sometimes that the pupils were quite different to the other local Wpeckers we managed...

    Sumava 8th to 25th April

Not a dedicated bird trip, but several dollops of time off to go looking for local owls and woodpeckers. My wife Helena having come to Scotland in 1968 always wanted to have a house in Sumava and we got an old farmhouse when the Russians were leaving Czecho. Rebuilding it in those days made 'A...
