California Birding (& Arizona) in August - RFI

Hi folks and thanks for reading My father and I are coming over from the U.K. to California and Arizona in August for 3 weeks of full on birding. Following on from a wonderful trip to Ohio (Magee Marsh) in 2011 & South Texas in 2012, I've become addicted to US birds & birding and been fortunate...

    American Bird Photo Quiz

Hi folks I've recently added an American version of my Bird Quiz to the website. I've tarted up the selection of species a bit, fiddled round with the workings under the bonnet (hood!) and am looking for feedback. http://usbirds.ceeege.com/USBirds_Identification_Quiz.php It's not going to be...

    Wader ID - Ohio May

Saw this on a flooded field during the Biggest Week and I think its a Semipalmated Sandpiper. There were Leasts and Semi-P's around and the Leasts were easier to id in the gloom with their yellow legs. The hunched bird feeding looks more like the field guide pose of a Semi-P. Thanks in advance

Little Green Job - Louisiana Gulf Coast

Hi folks, I received an e-mail asking me if this was a European Greenfinch that had turned up in a US garden. Obviously it's not but my US birding knowledge is very slight. Any ideas to what this is please? I live in Grand Isle, Louisiana-- on the Gulf Coast. About a month ago, i spotted a...

Yet another Marsh/Willow Tit teaser - UK

Hi folks, I was out birding in the Forest of Dean last weekend and not being experienced in Willow Tit calls, heard what I thought was a good shout for one. The bird didn't show that well and only allowed the the first three shots attached but after reading other similar threads here, think...

    Pipits - UK

Hi again folks, I went out this morning looking for Water Pipits and hopefully amongst these images I've found one/some. I know some were Rock Pipit with their black legs obvious and other Mipits with their more colourful demeanour. Where I was looking all three are regularly seen in season so...

    Gull ID - UK

Hi folks, My gull id skills are pretty poor especially on grey dismal mornings when a surprisingly white winged gull flies past through the gloom. I got a few record shots of the bird as it looked very pale compared to the numerous Black-Headed, Herring, Lesser and Greater Black Backs passing...

    British Bird Quiz

Hi everyone. Being a bit of a techy nerd and also an avid birder, I've attempted to marry the two in the name of "fun" I've created a quiz which randomly looks through the pictures on my website, selects 10 species and then asks the user to guess which the species is. I'm looking for a few...

    Scottish birding in September

Hi folks, Apologies for the fairly general nature of the post. I've read several other posts requesting similar information but most of them have been in the spring or winter months! I'm heading up to Scotland for a wedding on the 12th September and have a pass from the family for extending my...

Where to go birding in the U.K. this weekend? (10th-13th October)

Hi folks, I’m in the fortunate position of having a free weekend this weekend and even more lucky to obtain a full pass from my lovely wife to go birding where I wish, so I thought I’d put it out to the good people of Birdforum as to a good location for a weekends photo birding. Two areas I’ve...

I think these are Reed Warblers though I thought I'd ask the non colour blind birders out there to check! Thanks in advance,

    Tern ID - Solent UK

Hi there, I'm not sure on this one, and I'm trying to make it into a winter plumage Black Tern but am really not convinced. The first photo has another tern species with it for comparison which I'm fairly sure is a Common Tern but the light was fairly dismal. The bird in the second picture...

Wader ID - Minsmere Beach UK

Quickly snapped these two as they flew through the murk of another beautiful British Summer morning two weeks ago. Heading south at Minsmere Beach, Suffolk. Little Stint maybe? My wader ID skills still need lots of hard work......

    Raptor ID (Wales, UK)

Hi there, Saw this whilst out walking in some forestry land in South Wales last weekend. I think it's either a Fem Sparrowhawk or possibly a Goshawk as it was fairly large, (initial thought before using optics was Buzzard size). It did exhibit some odd behaviour with "wing clapping" at the top...

Best Digiscoping Setup? (Scope and Camera)

Hi there, I'm in the market for getting a spotting scope and would like to get any readers input. My usual birding setup is just me, my D300 and the 200-400 with a 1.4 TC. Usually this suffices but for those distant wader days it would be nice to add a good quality scope with a point and shoot...

    Tree Pipits?

Are these Tree Pipits or just Meadows? I'm fairly sure they are Tree as they were in a habitat where both are reported and they were exhibiting parachute flight behaviour that generally ended in the birds alighting at a "high" point, often midway up a small willow type tree. Thanks in advance,

    Pied or White Wagtails

As the title states, which are they? All taken this morning where white wagtails had been reported yesterday, and these birds looked paler grey than a few definate pieds that were hanging around there. Thanks in advance,

Personal Birding Help Request (Specifically Wales, Hampshire & Dorset)

Hi there, I'm wondering if any birders can help me out. I've got some free time off work over the next several weeks and would love to get a few new species to add to my "photographed list". I've been a birder all my life, I never really had a choice as we went on ringing holidays when I was a...

    Warbler ID Please - Bahrain

Hi everyone, I've been browsing through a few old photos and thought I know where to get this ID'd! I was on a business trip to Bahrain in 2006 and only had a pocket camera but saw this warbler foraging alongside the pavement I was walking on. It flitted between the bushes and the ground...

A few New Zealand ID's requested please

Hi there, I've been trawling through some holiday photos, pre birding camera, and discovered a few birds that I'd like ID'd if possible. I've managed to misplace my book from the trip and have only tagged the ones I remember. The shags and gull (seem to remember it was a Black-backed gull?)...
