    I agree.

Pleasantly surprised by all this activity!

Sorry, just realised that the query was posted by Rewcastle who is from Cumbria, not Scotland! Ignore the stuff about the range of Willow/Marsh tit.

Pleasantly surprised by all this activity!

I'm joining this debate a little late on, but I too would identify as a Marsh or Willow Tit. The Blackcap, both male and female, is much more grey in colour. The bird photographed appears distinctly sandy brown/buff. Both species of tit are at the edge of their UK range in southern Scotland...

Great stuff. Do tree sparrows over-winter with you? I'd be interested to see what is in each box, any chance of some photos? ;) You should be able to find out about local ringers from the BTO website, I'm sure that someone will be keen to get involved - I know I would!

Hi Ray, What happened with the hide at Hetton Bogs? I visited a couple of weeks back to find most of it dismantled. Not vandals I hope? Ben.

Great to hear an update from you Tree Sparrow! I've been hoping for some news but didn't want to ask. Hope all goes well!

Bird with cigarette 'caused fire' (BBC News)

Will this lead more smokers to dispose of their cigarettes properly? No. Will this lead to more homeowners blocking up every nook and cranny in their house to stop 'the birds' getting in in the first place? Probably.

I didn't realise that S abic own that area too, nice to know. The guy was certainly not prepared for whatever he was trying to do. Other than a post on BirdForum I didn't know who to 'tell' - is there an authority that keeps watch at Teesside NNR? I'm thinking the worst here, but could an...

    Durham Birding

Called at Greatham Creek/Saline lagoon for a very quick look at the group of Avocet and counted 10 birds. I know that most reports record eight birds, so my numbers may be wrong. More interesting was the odd behaviour of a man who appeared from behind the copse area on the southbound...

    Action against irresponsible dog owners

A very interesting story. I often wonder how many dog owners are aware of the disturbance that their pets can potentially cause, especially to ground-nesting birds.

Anyone get Siskins in their garden?

Ah, phew! Mine is an all-singing-and-dancing Droll Yankee nyger feeder and I still find pools (yes, pools!) of nyger seed underneath the feeder. That said, I don't feed with it regularly; I have a stash of nyger seed that I put out every now and then.

    Tree sparrow pair

I'm sure that your DIY are of high quality! Who said that boxes have to be perfect? I have a (bought!) terrace for house sparrows that's been up since the end of December, and there's been little/no interest in that! Keep patient! :eek!:

    Coal tit nesting dilemma

It is an offence under The Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 to 'intentionally take, damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird whilst it is in use or being built'. Perhaps you could wait until August/September to have the work done on your roof?

I enjoy reading this thread, though I do feel quite jealous of all you Tree sparrow ... hosts? I hope that you have some success with your box Tree Sparrow - patience required! Out of interest, what size is the entrance hole?

Anyone get Siskins in their garden?

Wonderful pictures birdbrainer! You're certainly brave feeding nyger from a regular-holed feeder. Don't you find 75% of your nyger on the ground?! Siskins still happily visiting my garden, with numbers slowly creeping up. Counted seven yesterday, including three males and four females.

    Durham Birding

Thanks Ian. The place looked very unwelcoming when I was there, it was all very "enter and ye shall perish" ! I'll have a pop along tomorrow perhaps. RSPB Saltholme Headed to Saltholme this afternoon for my first visit as a visitor and not as a volunteer. Highlights included black-tailed...
