possible Roseate Tern, Brownsea Island, Poole - 6 May

Could this be a Roseate tern? This is a distant phone-scoped shot. It was hanging around with the much larger Sandwich terns. There were plenty of Common terns about with similarly red legs but but this bird had a black bill, appears to have longish tail streamers and be ringed on both legs...

Monty or Pallid Harrier - Mallorca May 2016

This bird was seen at the Alburferetta reserve back in May. At the time it was identified by others present as a Montagu's Harrier - as several had been seen. But on closer inspection of the images I suspect / hope it may have been a Pallid harrier. Going on Collin's guide my reason for this...

Interesting Gull, 30 Jan 2016, London, UK

I found this gull on the Serpentine, Kensington Gardens in London at the end of January. Apologies of the quality of the photos - I didn’t have my camera with me so the iPhone shots are the best I could manage. Fortunately it came fairly close. Its lack of black wing tips suggest Iceland...

Possible Merlin at Cley, Norfolk, Dec 2014

I took these two shots - both fully enlarged - at Cley, Norfolk, UK at the end of Dec 2014. A Merlin had been reported in the area and after reviewing my photos I think I caught up with it at least twice, although I didn't know it at the time. Can anyone confirm please. thanks Tony

Bird of Prey Silhouette - London

I took these pics today at Kew Gardens, West London. It was gliding & circling high and not easy to judge size, all I can give is a very unhelpful b/w Kestrel & Buzzard in size. I've looked through my books and can't find anything quite like it. The pics are a 100% crop and lightened as far...

    Hudsonian Whimbrel ? Cornwall UK

I took this picture at St Just-in-Roseland in Cornwall in early November. To be honest I can't even decide whether its a Curlew or Whimbrel. However the defining feature to me is the lack of a white V up the back. Could this be a hudsonian Whimbrel? Tony

    Winter chiffchaffs, Cornwall, UK

Much to my surprise I came across several warblers on Swanpool beach, Falmouth, Cornwall. Not realising that we have over-wintering chiffchaffs in the country I initally thought that I had stumbled onto a rarity. I've now lowered my expectations (having seen several more in the area), but was...

    Finch, Cheshunt, UK

This finch was part of a small flock (6 or so) but the rest were hidden. It's yellow bill tells me it should be a redpoll or twite but the bill seems too large. There are plenty of redpoll in the area but I can't see any hint of a red crown. And I wouldn't expect to see twite in an Alder tree...

    Pipits, the Lizard, Cornwall, UK

I spotted these pipits in a field at the Lizard last week. I took the majority to be meadow pipits (eg. pic 1), but one individual stuck out as much lighter than the rest (pics 2 to 4). Is this a juvenile or some other pipit? Also on examination the bird in pic 5 seems a little different - I'm...

    Lesser? Whitethroat, South London, UK

I took these pics today at Canon's Farm, Banstead. While no expert on bird calls, it was definitely a different song from all the other Common Whitethroats and a Lesser has been reported in the area. I've not seen a lesser before but I think I can make out darker patches around the eyes which...

Water Pipit?, Hickling Broad, Norfolk, UK

I spotted this bird from a hide and the general consensus was that it is a Water Pipit. The light made it difficult to make out the plumage but it was overall very grey. Any thoughts? Tony

    Various Gulls, Falmouth, Cornwall, UK

I took these pictures at Swanpool in Falmouth over Xmas with the intention of getting to grips with the various ages of Herring Gulls. Its proving a lot harder than I expected, could I have some confirmations / corrections please. 1. 1st year winter Herring Gull 2. 1st year winter Herring Gull...

    Parakeet Roost in SE London?

About 15 - 30 mins before dusk I see all local parakeets heading East from Forest Hill, Crystal Palace, Honor Oak etc. There must be a big roost somewhere East. Does anyone know where? I have also heard of a big roost at a rugby ground - The Stoop maybe? Can anyone confirm where this is? thanks

    Crossbills, Mull, Scotland

I came across a flock of 8 or so crossbills on Mull last week. Whatever type of crossbill they turn out to be they're a lifer for me, but is it possible to tell from these shots what type they are? From bill size I've discounted parrot crossbill, but from what I read its nigh on impossible to...

Iceland or Glaucous Gull?, Inveraray, Scotland

I saw these gulls in the harbour at Inveraray last week. The first I assumed was a juvenile black backed gull. The last 3 pictures of the same gull I could only guess at glaucous or Iceland (possibly juvenile), but as I've never seen either I don't have a frame of reference. any suggestions...

    Various for ID, Scotland

I spent a great week in Scotland (Lock Lomond and Mull) last week with plenty of lifers for me. I need a few confirmations / ID's if anyone out there can help. 1) Eagle. doesn't have the 'barn door' profile of White Tailed eagle but does appear to have white tail feathers. 2) Pipit. I'm...

    Finches at Minsmere, Suffolk, UK

I spotted these guys on the gorse at Minsmere at the weekend. I couldn't ID at the time and looking at the pics now I feel they are probably Twite. The first and second birds were together on the same bush. The third bird taken nearby. Can anyone confirm please. Tony

    Pipits - Falmouth, Cornwall, UK

I found these pipits on Gyllyngvase beach in Falmouth on Boxing Day. The first two pictures are the same bird (I think) and am reasonably confident is a Rock Pipit, primarily due to lack of supercilium. The third picture is confusing me somewhat. From the leg colour & claw length I would go...

Warbler? #2 Rainham Marshes, Essex UK

Another warblerish LBJ from Rainham Marshes that I thought at the time might be a female stonechat but now I'm not so sure and my books don't really give much of a back view. Tony

    Warbler? Rainham Marshes, Essex Kent

Warbler? Rainham Marshes, Essex UK I spotted this chap in the distance so this picture is as good as it gets. It was about the size of a warbler and dartford warblers had been spotted in this patch of scrub. Could this be a dartford?. Any suggestions? Tony

    Phalarope & wader - Cley, Norfolk,UK

While at Cley last week I caught this Phalarope. I was told that there were both a Grey Phalarope and a Red-necked Phalarope spotted in the area around the time so I was wondering what I've got. Images 2 and 3 are of a wader. I'm thinking Knot but not sure. Tony

Fieldfare / Thrush in Blakeney, Norfolk, UK

I spotted this fella last week in Blakeney. At first I thought it was a fieldfare but the lack of grey head and arrowhead spots soon pointed me towards song thrush. However the legs appear to be too dark for song thrush. Any suggestions? Tony

    Little brown jobs, Cornwall UK

A couple of birds from Cornwall last weekend The first was near Falmouth and I can't find anything in my bird guide that matches the plumage. I think this one will be obvious! The second was down at the Lizard. any suggestions? Tony

    Raptor over Malpas, Cornwall, UK

This guy was having a tussle with a buzzard over Malpas in Cornwall last weekend. I thought at first it was a Peregine but studying my bird guide I'm wondering if its a Hobby. The moustache matches both and the chest pattern seem to match Hobby. But dosn't a hobby have a brown/rufous thigh...

Waders in Fal Estuary & Creeks, Cornwall

Hoping someone can help me with a few wader's spotted in Tresillion creek in Cornwall last weekend. Pic 1. Think this is a Black-tailed Godwit Pic 2. Godwits again? Pic 3. Thought the big fella might be a Greenshank but who are the little guys? Pic 4. On the right-hand side I know theres...
