    Bird Ringing books/references

if she is not a ringer yet but wants an example of a useful resource i would go with https://www.nhbs.com/identification-guide-to-birds-in-the-hand-book edit - this costs a lot more than svensson but will be more interesting to a non ringer

    Seabirds - Fife

I'm sure that you'll hear back eventually. At this time of year seabird people are still more likely to be spending more time in the field than at their desks. From my experience of reporting colour ringed shags CEH do reply, but it does sometimes take a few weeks if the person dealing with...

    Seabirds - Fife

The best way to report colour ringed shags on the east coast is to send details to [email protected] Some details of the project are here https://www.ceh.ac.uk/our-science/projects/mapping-winter-distribution-seabirds

Where in Grenada? Also, if you hack around the intertubes there are some papers by J Wunderle about the distribution of bananaquit colour morphs in Grenada.

help needed with discriminant function analysis

R is free but has a steep initial learning curve. On the other hand, it is becoming more and more popular in academic science and time spent learning to use it is unlikely to be wasted if you will have other data to analyse in the future.

    Travelling with bins

I have never had trouble flying with bins and a scope in my carry on - I do sometimes explain that they are in there as I put my bag on the x-ray belt. Once in Trinidad I was asked to get the scope out; the officer told me it looked like a sawed off shotgun....

Cape Cod - pelagic trips & advice

A local birder organizes short pelagics from Chatham - but not to a fixed schedule - details here http://capecodbirds.org/chatham-pelagics/ I think he posts details of upcoming trips on MASSBIRD, but on short notice. Whale watching trips run from Barnstable Harbour (Hyannis Whale Watcher - note...

    Mallorca 2013

A practical query for the Mallorca locals regulars - is it possible to walk from Cala San Vincenc to the Boquer Valley 'overland' without going through P. Pollensa? or is it easier to walk a big L to P Pollensa and then the Boquer? (I have a map that appears to show paths for this). Or is that...

Corn Buntings in England? Where are they?

I have had corn bunting regularly this summer at rspb bempton cliffs, but it isn't particularly handy for Southampton!

Bird ringing - please help me get involved

While you are trying to find a trainer I highly recommend one of the BTO/Field Studies Council introduction to ringing weekend courses - which will help you get a bit of initial experience and help you decide if ringing really is is for you. Best of luck.

Many thanks. I really fancy a trip but have been put off by the transport issue until I found this thread.

where to go in Andalucia when you don't have a car.

Without meaning to hijack the thread - how easy is it to get to and from El Rocio without a car?

    RFI: Listing software for MAC

I downloaded Scythebill on a windows laptop, but when I tried to open it it told me I needed Java, which seemed like more effort, and then I couldn't delete the file. If you are not very techy it may not be the best solution.

General Knowledge Book about Ecuadorian Biodiversity

No idea for an Ecuador specific book but I think that you can get the Kricher book in Spanish as pdf from the ABA website.

    Ecuador and Galapagos Guides: Suggestions?

For the Galapagos I found the Swash and Still book more useful than Fitter. For birds only the out of print Isabel Castro book was good.

    Hand Luggage limits to Goa

http://www.bigpockets.com/catalog/apparel/vest-equatorial.html i usually fill the pockets with guidebooks and bins (or have them around my neck) so my scope and a few odds and ends are the only thing in my hand luggage

    Hand Luggage limits to Goa

i've flown monarch once, to the gambia, and had my hand luggage weighed, as did most people in our group. i have a birding vest with massive pockets and put loads in there which seemed to be fine and people were allowed to have a scope around their neck on a strap as well.

    Northumbrian Birding

The seabird centre and boat trips are/were a private business, albeit one that worked closely with the RSPB. It would be a shame if there has been a falling out.

    St Louis - Early June

Well, the childminding that we were there to do was more labour intensive than I anticipated but I took a sneaky trip to Shaw Nature Reserve one morning (mainly as I had been before and wanted to compare the seasons). It was very hot so I took it pretty steady but saw enough to make the trip...

    St Louis - Early June

I will be make another one of my occasional visits to St Louis in early June. Can any MO birders advise whether 1) any migrants will still be around (especially warblers); and 2) if so, anywhere other than Tower Grove Park (which I know about and will try to visit) that is recommended for...

    Ecuador and the Galapagos.

For the Galapagos I preferred the Swash and Still book to the Fitter Fitter and Hosking one, but my favourite was the out of print Castro/Phillips book. It's still possible to get second hand copies of this relatively cheaply with a bit of luck. When I was in Ecuador the guide had a Spanish...
