    Chickens???

I hope this isn't too daft a question but what bird was the domestic chicken bred from. I have always assumed either Partridge or Pheasant, does anyone know? Does the predecessor still exist in it's natural form anywhere? It would amuse me to be able to tick chicken. Mick

    Memory refresh

I am looking to upgrade my scope in the new year and one of the high end scopes has apparently got a very good zoom only I can't remember which one, please refresh my memory and save me going through all the scope threads to find it, by good I mean very wide field of view when not zoomed in...

    Linux for beginners?

I hope to be buying a new computer in the next few months and fancy installing Linux to get away from having to use windows, question is how best to go about it? I have investigated Ubunto and Mandriva either look like they would do for a beginner like me. Any Linux users out there who can give...

    Question about Wasps

A few weeks ago I was walking to the hide at Stodmarsh and I came upon the remains of something that must have been a Harriers dinner(turned out to have been a Water Rail) the point is the left over internal bits were crawling with Wasps, is this normal? Mick

    Swift question

A couple of days ago I saw a solitary Swift, the only one I have seen in a week or so, what I am wondering is, what are the survival prospects for the last few stragglers? Not good I would have thought. Mick

    Opticron tripod, any good?

Does any one use the Opticron tripod advertised at Warehouse Express for around £89 and is it any good, I am using an Opticron GS815 scope and am well pleased with that and thought it might be nice to stick to the same brand when I upgrade, if it's any good that is. Mick

    Just wondering?

I have got bins stashed all over the place but I still find myself in situations were there are none to hand when I want them, so the question is does any one make optics that are small, light and robust enough to hang on a keyring and still give a useful performance, I say keyring because my...

    El Cheapo upgrade question

I am using an Acuter scope which is starting to annoy me but alas I shan't be able to afford a better scope for some time, question is, in the interim would it be worth buying a fixed eyepiece to replace the zoom lens, given that I rarely use the zoom because the quality is so poor at higher...

    Is this a Chiffchaff?

I didn't hear it call so no help there, what caught my attention was the fact that it repeatedly flew up a foot or two and landed in more or less the same place, it did this about 6 times until it flew of in a straight line to some trees and I never re found it, do Chiffchaffs do that? Thanks...

    Picasa2

Is anyone else using Picasa2 from Google, if so how useful do you find it? I find it good for making backups of photos because it finds stuff you forgot you had, wherever they might be lurking and it keeps a record of what you have backed up already, does loads of other stuff too. Mick

    MegaPixels, what's that about????

Both my previous cameras where 2 megapixel and gave good results for general photography, when I loaded them on my PC the images where big enough to have to scroll them all over the place to look at them, my newest one is 3.2 megapixel so I have to scroll even more to look at them, ok so I can...

    How to describe birdsong???

On another thread a Dunnock's song was described as sounding like a supermarket trolley wheel squeaking which I thought was rather good and I have heard of a Great Tit sounding like someone pumping up a bike tyre, also good and it works better for me than descriptions like the classic little bit...

    Onspeed Broadband alternative!!!

Has anyone else any experience with this facility, I installed it yesterday and so far I am impressed, apart from the greater speed it has other benefits like a pop up blocker which would be welcome for IE users and in page add suppression, handy stuff, if you are stuck with dial up it is well...

    Rules of thumb??????

Birds of prey, given that I only tend to get a glimpse of them, what are the things to look out for, I know the hovering thing is unique to Kestrels and Sparrowhawks have shortish wings, I am asking because I have heard far more experienced birders than me be getting tripped up thinking they are...

Something nasty to be aware of.

    Converting Quicktime to VCD

Does anyone know how to convert Quicktime MOV files to something that I can burn onto a VCD that a DVD player will recognise and play, I have googled and tried some stuff but not had any luck, the ones I have found are a bit geeky for me to work out, eg. TMPGenc. I don't want any bells and...
