Improving image transfer speeds by USB C cable - an idiots experience

This isn’t rocket science and if you know all about USB C cables – just ignore this post. I’ve aimed at people like myself who are not experts but may need some help. I have read a lot on here about slow transfer speeds and I got frustrated with slow/inconsistent read speeds from my R5 CF...

Canon R3 or Canon R5 for bird photography?

    Good spot. Spot Focus.

Canon R3 or Canon R5 for bird photography?

I have spot metering enabled on a back button. No problems when the bird is big in the frame, but when it gets down to being small in the frame, it struggles - which is a pity as I often want a reasonable shot to identify the bird using the R5's cropping properties.

Canon R3 or Canon R5 for bird photography?

RF 100-500 (for birds) RF 100 macro and EF MPE-65.

Canon R3 or Canon R5 for bird photography?

Been looking at the evolution of the Canon R3 specifications and considering whether the R3 would be better for me for general walkaround/hide photography. The question I ask myself is "Why do you need the R3, what's wrong with the R5?" and I find myself answering "not much" and indeed there are...

    Ultra lightweight gimbal head?

Thanks for all the very helpful advice. Ended up buying a FlexShooter Mini Arca (double ball head) which is 1/3 the weight of my 4GD Mongoose but retains many features of a gimbal head. Link to Flexshooter Mini Arca Not the cheapest option (:cry::cry:) but having tried it a couple of times...

    Ultra lightweight gimbal head?

I agree.... mostly! Still spend quite a bit of time (four hours+) in hides and putting it down can lead to missing those moments".

    Ultra lightweight gimbal head?

Still looking into this. There isn't an ultra lightweight gimbal head that I can find and the best option (for me!) seems to be the Flexshooter pro mini except it is so expensive (approx. £520). Still looking (and negotiating with the wife :D:D ).

    Ultra lightweight gimbal head?

Thx for suggestions. I just don't get on with monopods and monogimbal not really suited to tripod. Done some research and my 4G Mongoose 3.6 is still the lightest around at 1.5lb/0.68kg (which is why I bought it), so may have to accept the bulk and benefit from the weight saving. Funny there are...

    Ultra lightweight gimbal head?

I am gradually moving to lightweight gear (old age and my arms now drag on ground due to carrying 1Dxii/600 f4 :D) but still need to use a tripod from time to time (waiting around, hide shots) - my Gitzo tripod and 4G gimbal head are far too heavy duty and my small ball joint head is too sloppy...

So is the Canon R5 a bird photography body?

Reason I ask is that I have always had my IS on. Interesting exchanges elsewhere (e.g. here https://www.facebook.com/groups/canonr5/permalink/460824385124921 where some people are saying IS off in certain circumstances. Just wondered if I just blindly follow what I expect to be the best rather...

So is the Canon R5 a bird photography body?

As there is a bit of focus(sic) on birds in flight, what's the consensus here on image stabilisation on or off for BIF on the R5 (+RF100-500?)

    New bird photographer

Agree with advice to go MkII - not least because to some extent you are future-proofing yourself if you decide to upgrade your camera body at some stage. The MkII works extremely well with all bodies up to and including the new R5 (with an adapter).

So is the Canon R5 a bird photography body?

My understanding is the same. Physical/mechanical interlocks, not software. Never mind. I'll just wait or the 24-600 f2 isviiii drone version :smoke:

So is the Canon R5 a bird photography body?

Important: Canon R5 and the RF 100-500 PLUS RF 1.4x I found this info whilst looking at the RF100-500 and RF1.4x Extender combo. It significantly affected my (personal!) decision, so I thought I would share. The RF1.4x can only be used with the RF100-500 when the zoom is greater than 300mm...

Very nice images, especially of the Little Owls. Still waiting for my R5 (late ordering).

So is the Canon R5 a bird photography body?

One aspect that intrigues me is the possibility of taking stills from video. I have experimented with this on my 1Dii + 600 f4 but single frame resolution was not too good. But with 8K video, images may be comparable to a 20 megapixel still camera? Also seen some videos showing the eye tracking...

So is the Canon R5 a bird photography body?

Now all the specifications are out, just wondered what the thoughts were on whether the R5 is a good bird photography body. See many good things so where does it fit in the Canon 1Dx iII/II, 5D IV and 7DII spectrum? Would you like to own one .......... and will you?

    Micro adjustment

I have used FoCal a lot. My engineers mind likes measurement and (implied) precision o:) I have had lenses that I thought were "iffy" and found problems getting ANY satisfactory results, even using FoCal. I used this to prove to Canon that my 300f4 was out of range for AFMA. It may mean that I...

    Canon 500 f4 Mark 1 purchase - some advice

I have a budding young (teenage) photographer who is just about able to buy a second hand Canon 500 f4 Mk1 lens from a well known Norfolk store. Lens is good, with some dust but no affect on image quality. It does have a non-working focus recall button on the lens, but not too worried about that...
