    For ease of carrying in the field - definetely Morcombe's compact guide. For information - Pizzey and Knight or Morcombe's handbook. I think Slater is the worst of the lot - but you'll find a lot of people swear by it.

    What is that little grey bird?

    I once saw a Purple Swamphen attacking a tiger snake there once! I think it did it because it had chicks nearby. Was amazing to watch. The snake did eventually give up and go the other way.

    Looks like a Little Eagle to me. More pale on the front of the wings than a Whistling Kite, it also flies slightly differently (heh, there's 'jizz' for ya!)

    Black Swan (Stranraer) is it rare?

    Interesting that in the UK people collect Black Swans, and here in W.A. there a scattered ornamental populations of introduced Mute Swans. I think I like the Black Swan better, that candy red bill and the curly white feathers on the wingtips are beautiful.

    I have seen Freckled Ducks once before in my 'birding career'. That was in December 04 at pretty much the same spot on Herdsman. There were about 10 of them that time. I have seen the Mannikins twice at Herdy, never seen a Goldfinch in W.A.
