    Cleaning and sanitizing feeders

About a year ago work consumed most of my free time and I took down all my feeders. I could not find the time to keep them filled and clean. I hastily emptied the feeders then left them in my storage shed. Needless to say they need a thorough cleaning and sanitizing. I thought about using a...

    Impatient hummer

Yesterday while cleaning the feeders one male Anna got impatient with me and started aggressively buzzing me as a cleaned and filled the feeders. When I finally was ready to hang the feeders the little guy was in my face. I mean he was about 3 inches away at eye level. He kept it up until I...

    Suggestions for hummingbird books

I am looking for suggestions on books about hummingbirds. Anyone come accross one or two that are a little more scientific than those that are about attracting and a general overview of the hummingbirds that visit North America backyards?

    When to discard a nest?

About a month ago chickadees entered our nest box. Upon inspection a week later there was a nest. There has been no activity in the nest box since then. Yesterday I noticed an Oak Titmouse entering and leaving the nest box several times. Should I discard the nest that was built by the Chickadees...

    Rats, what to do?

Well after years of feeding the birds rats have found their way into my yard. Probably more the case they were always there, but now show themselves during daylight hours. While sitting on my back deck I saw several enjoying a meal along with the squirrels and mourning doves. If that was not...

    Nikon ProStaff 8x25

I am looking for an alternative to my 8x42 that I can carry with me at all times and share with my kids without the worry of them damaging my more expensive pair. The Nikon ProStaff 8x25 looks to fit the bill. Anyone here have experience with these? Pros/Cons/Alternatives?

Need help on search feature for Peterson Feeder Birds of North America

Using the search function the default filters set to "All" yields 162 matched species. Narrowing my search I selected "State" and choose California and the result was 122 matched species. I then selected "type" and choose "Aerialist" and the result was 7 matched species. So far so good, but as...

    Anyone using the ibird app?

I recently bought an iphone and have been looking at bird id apps. The ibird series caught my attention. Anyone using these apps? I was thinking about either the Western edition or going full out and getting the pro. What are your thoughts on these apps? Would you recommend ibird or do you know...

    That's gratitude for you

Last week I put out a Birdie Bell about 15 feet from a nesting box in my yard. Today while cleaning/refilling the hummingbird feeders I see that a hummingbird (Anna) was taking bits and pieces away to build a nest,,,,,, in a tree two houses down. That's gratitude for you. :-O

    Wasps

Yesterday I checked my nesting box and noticed a wasp nest clinging to the ceiling. Not wanting to take a chance knocking down the nest and risk being stung I left the nesting box open and turned the hose nozzle to 'jet' and standing 20 feet away blasted the interior for a couple of minutes. I...

    Nest box cleaning

Last year I bought a dual purpose nesting/roosting box. I got lucky with Chestnut Back Chickadees calling it home last spring. Just before this winter I cleanout the box and hit it with a blast of water from the hose. Now with nesting season here (or soon) I was told by a customer at my local...

    Mold or algae?

Today I was out back watching the many Anna's that stay around year round. As I approached one of my feeders I noticed something floating in the nectar. I thought it might be mold so I scared off the hummers feeding. Each of the 5 feeders had a greenish mass floating in the nectar. It wasn't...

    Rusting grates on suet feeders

I have a couple of Bird Choice Tail Prop suet feeders with the grates rusting. Seems I have to replace them every year. Is rust bad for bird? Any suggestions to avoid having to buy new grates each year?

    Near miss

Today I was watering near one of my feeders when the "bully", as I call him, chased off a would be visitor. In its high speed chase it narrowly avoided colliding into my face. I wonder if anyone has ever been injured by a hummingbird? It seems their bill could do some major damage. I am thinking...

    Educate me

I have a small internet business selling bird feeders. Today I received notice that a hummingbird feeder had sold. It was sold to someone in Singapore. Since hummingbirds are only found in the Americas, what nectar eating birds are in Singapore that would feed from a hummingbird feeder?

    Less visits this year

Last year at this time I had over 6 Annas visiting daily and a couple of Allens, so far I have just 2 Annas. I am thinking it is due to the weather. This year we have only had a few days of what I would call spring here in San Jose, CA. It feels more like late fall than late spring. The rains...

    Some observations

When my kids (4 and 6 years old) play on the back lawn just a few feet from the feeders the birds don't seem to mind, but if I stand up from my chair 25 feet away they scatter. Chestnut backed chickadees don't seem to fear human like other birds that visit my yard, with the exception of...

    Taste test

When spring arrived my wife and I setup some hanging flowering plants. Since then I have noticed the hummingbirds prefer the natural nectar way more then the artifical nectar (sugar water solution). It seems I am pouring out 90+ percent of the sugar water at each changing these days.

    Got my new Nikon's

After nearly twenty some odd years of using my Nikon Travelite bins I broke down and bought the new 8x42 Nikon ATB Monarch w/Dielectric prism coating. I should have never waited so long to upgrade. What a difference! |=)|

    10x or 8x

Hello, I want to upgrade to mid level binoculars and have been looking at 10x42 and 8x42. Seems these days the internet is the only real source for bins. Given that, I don't have a way of testing for myself the two powers I am considering. What I like to know is should I get an 8x or 10x? Are...

Nectar: Acceptable sugar to water ratio

What are the acceptable sugar to water ratio for making hummingbird nectar? I have always used 1 (sugar):4 (tap water), but have seen 1:3 and 1:5.

    Nectar

Does the nectar produced in flowering plants spoil like man made nectar? If not, what is in the nectar produced in a flower that prevents it from going bad?
