Lamprey encounter I got lucky this weekend following up a report last week of Brook Lamprey on the River Itchen at Ovington. After a half-hour search of the stony shallows this little beauty appeared from nowhere and began to remove pebbles from the stream using it's mouth-sucker as leverage...

    Macro Flash

I'm thinking of purchasing either the Canon 100mm macro or it's IS version but want to know what is the best (and least expensive!) flash to use with it for close-up insect work. I currently use a Marumi ringflash on my existing Sigma macro but I get very harsh light except on bright days. I...

    Shieldbugs.

Yes your ID correct. There is a second tortoise bug Eurygaster maura on chalk downland which is very similar and you need to check if there is a slight depression at the front of the head between the two frontal lobes to be sure it is testudinaria
  21. THE WANDERER

    Shieldbugs.

Thats a Sloe Bug aka Hairy Shieldbug (Dolycoris baccarum). It is rarely seen on Sloes but I have found nymphs on Dark Mullein before. Dave

Ah, I did wonder about that but using Townsend and waring I was struggling to see the double arrowhead spots near the tip of the forewing which they say are diagnostic of the 2 Engraileds. Thanks Dave
