    Snipe from Alaska

Hello All, I am soliciting opinions on these three photographs of a snipe taken in Alaska. The bird was seen well and studied at some length but these are the best of the images that were taken (low light, wet optics, wind etc...). Specifically I am interested about whether the expected...

    Panama (dead) bat ID

While at the Canopy Tower last month this bat flew into a wall of the building and was found outside one of the bedrooms. Despite having a body, and a field guide I confess to be stymied. My closest guess is Large Footed Bat, Myotis adversus...

New Paper indicating a Caribbean origin for some Icterids.

A new paper out in Condor further indicating that changes in the taxonomic treatment of I. dominicensis is warranted. Sturge, Rachel J., Frode Jacobsen, Bryan B. Rosensteel, Richie J. Neale, and Kevin E. Omland 2009. Colonization of South America from Caribbean Islands confirmed by molecular...

Potential Taxonomic Changes to the ABA Avifauna

I thought a discussion of this topic might be fun, and perhaps illuminating so I have constructed an excel file with a (likely not exaustive) list of potential splits and lumps that might occur. I have only included splits that would add to the ABA list - in other words I do not discuss...

    An Alaska Mystery Bird

Mark Schwan photographed this mystery bird along the SE Alaska coastline near Juneau on July 14, 2009. The masked look and pale rump were apparently evident in the field. Mark spent little time studying the bird, concentrating instead on taking photographs. Unfortunately the bird was not seen...

A question concerning Arctic Warbler subspecies

Hello all, I photographed this Arctic Warbler on the Pribilof Islands, Alaska on October 9, 2007. It does not represent the expected taxa, kennicotti, which departs the state by the end of the first week in Sept. The bird appeared noticeably browner above and whiter below than kennecotti and was...
