    Is this a Lesser Kestrel?

Thanks for all the comments. I need to get some clearer photos!

    Is this a Lesser Kestrel?

Common kestrels seem to spend a lot of time hovering while they spot their prey. They move on - usually a short distance - if nothing comes up and hover again. This bird was far more adventurous, covering much greater distances. It did hover but not for long before it zoomed off again. When it...

    Is this a Lesser Kestrel?

We are on the Gironde estuary- West Coast. I watch kestrels most days. This bird did not behave like a common Kestrel.

    Is this a Lesser Kestrel?

I thought the pointed tail feathers were a feature? Also the limited degree of hovering?

    Is this a Lesser Kestrel?

Apologies for the quality - approx 500m away. Watched it for 10ins before it perched. Long fast swooping flights. Did not hover much like a Common Kestrel. Tail pointed unlike Common. Located near estuary and marshes in SW France. Are Lesser Kestrels seen so far north?

    Can anyone ID this bird?

Thanks Tom, I thought so, but have never seen one here (or anywhere else) before, so didn't want to prejudice any ID. Not often I can add a new bird to my list.

Seen yesterday on our lawn in SW France. Smaller than a thrush. Colours are brown, grey and black. Sorry about photo quality. Any ideas? Thanks.

    Golden Eagle in Hertfordshire!

This was much larger than a buzzard or red kite. It was not a local species. Its size, colour and beak resembled that of a golden eagle - the wing span was about a metre. Is there anywhere that falconers report lost birds?

    Golden Eagle in Hertfordshire!

Are there any reports of an escaped golden eagle in South Hertfordshire? I and a bunch of friends saw a very large bird of prey in a tree in their garden on New Year's day. Unfortunately, it flew off before I had a chance to get a photo. No, we were not still suffering from the effects of the...

    A cuckoo in the nest?

2 more pics These babies are in SW France. Funnily enough, there has been a sparrow family here this year - the first I have seen in our garden for years, but we do get a few whinchats and I wonder if this might be one of those - see the white streak down its chest. It has now left the nest -...

    A cuckoo in the nest?

I am assuming this is a cuckoo chick in a nest of black redstarts. The nest has been home to dozens of b.r.'s over the years but we found this larger chick on the floor under the nest - too young to fly yet. So I popped him back in the nest where he/she smothered the 3 br chicks in there. The...

    Storks still in Gironde estuary

I saw 5 storks circling yesterday here in Mortagne-sur-Gironde. Never seen them this late before. Normally left by October. Exceptionally mild weather in Oct/Nov.

    Garden Warbler? SW France

A first spotting of this in our garden, catching insects and returning to its perch time and again. Hardly any marks - garden warbler?
  22. Stork Migration

    Stork Migration

This photo was taken near Mortagne on the Gironde estuary on the 22nd August. There are over 50 birds in this flock, gathering to migrate south to Africa. Storks have been successfully re-introduced to the Gironde area in recent years, estimated now at 300-400 breeding pairs each year.

    Night Singing

Is it true that blackbirds sing in the dead of night, as the Beatles song would have us believe? Or have I heard a nightingale, singing for a long time at 2am in SW France. Next time, I'll record it. But it sounded a lot like the nightingale recording on the RSPB website.
