    Is this a Lesser Kestrel?

    Apologies for the quality - approx 500m away. Watched it for 10ins before it perched. Long fast swooping flights. Did not hover much like a Common Kestrel. Tail pointed unlike Common. Located near estuary and marshes in SW France. Are Lesser Kestrels seen so far north?

    A cuckoo in the nest?

    I am assuming this is a cuckoo chick in a nest of black redstarts. The nest has been home to dozens of b.r.'s over the years but we found this larger chick on the floor under the nest - too young to fly yet.     I saw 5 storks circling yesterday here in Mortagne-sur-Gironde. Never seen them this late before. Normally left by October. Exceptionally mild weather in Oct/Nov.

    A first spotting of this in our garden, catching insects and returning to its perch time and again. Hardly any marks - garden warbler?

    Night Singing

    Is it true that blackbirds sing in the dead of night, as the Beatles song would have us believe? Or have I heard a nightingale, singing for a long time at 2am in SW France. Next time, I'll record it. But it sounded a lot like the nightingale recording on the RSPB website.
