I'm sorry to have to ask... Exciting Twite stuff?

Hello, I have shared this on Twitter with some success so far. Following this success, we are now seeking to extend our small project to not only replace stolen equipment, but also *perhaps* to pay for some data loggers. Please do take the time to read through the attached page, donate (if...

    Gull, Lancs Sept 2016.

Hello all, I have briefly span this through twitter to no avail and to a friend who has more experience with gulls than I. Taken in Lancashire, September this year. Initially down as yellow-legged gull, some notes that may not be obvious from the photo. Streaking to head, mantle...

I'd agree with Steve I think, although that's only based on the structure of the bird.

    Herring gull type

Hello all, Came across this larger Larus amongst BHG in nottinghamshire today. Superficially 2nd winter herring gull, would be happy to mark it down as such if not for the sheer bulk of it. Also seems darker than Id expect? I apologise for the scope shot.

Cant enlarge the photo, but I'm not sure about Caspian - Even on a small picture the shape doesn't look quite right.

    Dead bird in flood water

Floated this on Twitter earlier and got a mixed response on possible ID, I thought it might be interesting to also post it here. This was taken by a friend of a friend in after the boxing day floods in Todmorden, Yorkshire. it was sent to me to look at this morning. I'm afraid there's no...

Is all this bird ringing necessary?

There's an awful lot of rather unscientific speculation and anecdotal figures on this thread, to many for this argument to ever go anywhere. What's most interesting to me is the 'all of this' part of the title, bird ringing is widely publicised, usually based on it's achievements and merits and...

    Interesting Eggs Found In Attic

I'm afraid Phil is right, regardless of the status of the bird it is illegal to own eggs from any species. I'm afraid you have very little choice but to destroy them to remain within the law. Many museums no longer take oology specimen, certainly the ones i've ever been affiliated with are full...

    Birds You've Only Seen Once

It's an interesting way to illustrate the decline in Corn bunting in the UK, but they seem to common on this list.

Marsh Tit / Willow Tit, UK (Greater Manchester)

A marsh tit would be a very good record for Pennington or anywhere in GM for that matter - Willow tits are well established in that area.

Before i email the publisher... Uk goose

It's listed as s typical white-front. Becoming more convinced that it's a greylag with a white face for whatever reason. I've seen partial leucism in greylags like this before but the bill gives it away for me.

    Good or bad PR?

Colin up to now you've been quite balanced - there's no point any of us engaging if this debate if it's going to descend into hysterics. I think it's been established earlier on that the number of casualties from bird ringing is low. Even if it was 1/50 an R selected species such as Blue tit...

    Good or bad PR?

You have no case to rest Colin, I was responding to this. I think it's brave and if a little extreme I agree to an extent. I find that it' less the ringers but group mentalities that put the data before welfare and agree that the BTO should be seen to be addressing this publicly. as I say in...

    Good or bad PR?

I haven't read the entirety of the above conversation, they're all the same. However, on the whole and as someone who does ring birds, I agree with the first few comments. Ringing is an important and necessary tool available to ornithologists. It's not a Sunday afternoon hobby for those who...
