Nyjer seed - birds avoiding it?

They've got American grown niger seed now that is not irradiated. It lasts a lot longer and the birds seem to like it even better since it's not toasted. I buy it here: http://www.nigerthistle.com/

    Hawk Attack!

Well, all the activity at our nyger feeders has brought some new birds - two different types of hawks. We frequently see hawks high in the air hunting in general or sitting on a fence post, but now they are hitting our feeding stations. The hawks we have been able to identify in the past have...

Thanks Helen and Bartolli...Koi ponds!!! Never crossed my mind, but great idea. I'm heading out to surf the net for koi pond sealant |=)|

    Leaky (concrete) Bird Bath

My favorite bowl cracked last year due to ice also. I replaced it, but it was a great bowl...very wide and shallow, so I kept it. It has the same type of cracks in it, only three of them. Structurally, its rock solid with the concrete built on some kind of wire mesh skeleton. I tried a few...

How do i steal my neghbors gold finches....errr

Yep, we added sunflower hearts to our Goldfinch setup about 2 weeks ago, and they are still all over the live nyger. The sunflower hearts were a good add, as the Goldfinches snack on them, but they live on the nyger feeders. I have to fill our live nyger tubes daily...the sunflower hearts tube...

How do i steal my neghbors gold finches....errr

Well, my Goldfinch count is now at 13! A group of 5 showed up 3 days ago and so far are sticking around |:d| Am heading out to buy a sunflower heart feeder to add to my niger feeders as they are starting to fight over available space. Right now I have a tube feeder with 6 perches and tear...

    Are certain birds "pests"?

Thanks for all this good information, Joe |:d| I'm going to start thinking about mixing my own blend or start feeding individual seeds at individual feeders like you mention. In fact I like that idea a lot so I can better see who's eating what!

    Water freezing!

I've got the same problem here in Tennessee. In fact the frozen water cracked my concrete bird bath bowl last year. Then I got an electric bird water heater for Christmas. It looks like one of those electric charcoal starters for a bar-b-q but it's submersible. Sometimes it doesn't heat the...

    Are certain birds "pests"?

Hi Joe, I'm using Purina Premium Picnic which has these ingredients: Black Oil Sunflower, White Millet, Safflower, Sunflower Kernel/Chips, Peanut Pieces, Raisins, Cherries. I've got one of those standard looking pagoda style feeders on a pole on the other side of the yard from my niger...

    Are certain birds "pests"?

I was going to ask the same question...what to do about the Cowbirds that dominate my feeder put up for the Cardinals and Bluejays? I know the Cowbirds have got to make a living too, but holy cow, they run off the Cardinals in particular. Oh well...:'D

How do i steal my neghbors gold finches....errr

Hi Mike, It just hit me...the tree where the "live" niger seed is hanging is a "Redbud." Its bare as a bone right now, but this spring the Goldfinches should love it!

Hi etudiant, Thanks for the info on the sunflower and Goldfinch/Chickadee feeders. I saw fudl's post about the specialized feeders (thanks, fudl |=)|), but when I started looking around the internet I couldn't figure out exactly what I was looking for (there's a gazillion different types that...

How do i steal my neghbors gold finches....errr

Hi Joe, Yeah, the live niger is about twice as much |8.| But they eat it all gone and I don't end up throwing a bunch away like I used to with the imported niger, so I figure its about a wash. Plus I've got Goldfinches sticking around for the first time |=)| I'm going to try the sunflower...

How do i steal my neghbors gold finches....errr

Thanks, everyone! I'm going to forget about the rock salt idea and just offer a regular grit. Hi Katy, Your note got me worried, so I Googled "Is Guizotia abyssinica a noxious weed" and its not, hooray!!! I found these links: "Although G. abysinnica itself is not a noxious weed...

How do i steal my neghbors gold finches....errr

Hi KC, Most of the finches ignored my thistle feeders too! They would nibble a bit, but I would usually just have to throw the thistle seed out after a while as it would just sit there. A Goldfinch would come by once in a while, but then just move on. You might want to try the live niger...

How do i steal my neghbors gold finches....errr

Ok Mike, thanks for the tip about red |=)| Hi Etudiant, I've got a bird bath near the tree with the niger feeders. I also saw a tip on another thread here that said they like rock salt - didn't know that. So that is the next thing on my list to add to my setup. We get quite a bit of rain...

How do i steal my neghbors gold finches....errr

How do i steal my neighbors gold finches? LIVE Niger seed! Bought some about 2 months ago at www.nyger.com and have been doing great. Can't wait to get up in the morning and watch the finches come in for breakfast. I used to only see a few Goldfinches now and then. But within a couple of...

    Gold finches

Hello All, Don't know about elsewhere, but imported niger here in the states is sterilized, so it is dead seed. That is why I think my wild birds are "iffy" about it at best. But I just found a shop here in the states that is selling domestic niger and BANG, the Goldfinches, Tits, Chickadees...
