On structure and plumage it's Lesser for me.

I've definitely learnt a lot, and enjoyed seeing all the great photos - thanks

I'd say it's a Lesser, Steve. Are there any pro-Mealy features? Think I'm correct in saying that the browner rumped Mealy birds are females, which are more difficult to separate from Lesser, but you'd expect to see more contrast on the face, with pale super, distinct ear coverts, extensive dark...

Mealy (hold mouse pointer over photos for image filenames) - originally thought adult female, but just reread original post...

I have to say that I agree. It looks okay on some features, but the bill and bib seems on the large side. I'd want better photos/field notes/sketches before falling either side of the fence.

Thanks Doc. Based on the range of photos I think this is a 1st winter male Mealy. What do others think?

Doc, redpoll102 is interesting... assuming it's not the same bird as 100 and 101? Image looks a bit grainy, did you have to adjust the levels on that one? What's the ISO on the original? Any more photos that you definitely know to be that bird? Had a ringed female Lesser on the garden feeders...

I think Lesser can be excluded on distribution, as the photo is almost certainly from US/Canada. From left to right by head position I would guess: 1. Common (flammea) 2. Hoary (hornemanni) large bird small poll 3. Hoary (exilipes) large bird small poll 4. Common (flammea) ? can't see much 5...

I thought I'd read that pink wash - nomatter how pale - continuing that far down the breast eliminated Arctic?

I think the last bird is too pink on the breast for Arctic, so Mealy for me. The one before that could be, but not enough features shown.

Now my half-rant is over... here's a pale bird I found: http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=191241 That's the height of my scarcer Redpoll field experience... a single bird. So I'm just a very keen beginner :-)

Agree entirely... I wish more records were submitted and published, with full details in reports, when birds are both accepted and rejected. I'd like to see on what grounds the records were accepted/rejected so: - I can learn about how to submit better records - Future birders have all the...

Definite Mealy for me. Ear covert patch, bib, warm tones... I sound like a broken record at times!|:d|
