    It might be worth thinking about public transport. You should be able to get a bus to Christchurch and then from there to Kaikoura pretty easily. An overnight stay or two (plenty of cheap hostels in the town) and you can do a few seabird trips and maybe go whale watching too.

    I think you should be able to see quite a few good birds not too far from Wanaka. That's fairly close to Twizel and Lake Pukaki for Black Stilt, Wrybill, Banded Dotterel, Black-fronted Tern etc. Nearby Mount Cook Village is a good place to look for New Zealand Falcon and Rifleman, as well as...
