    New AX Visio 10x32 binocular

The problem with the visio, is that it has been programmed to identify species, but doesn't know when to Stop, which is an important skill of a birder. It would have a lot more respect if it didn't keep trying and trying for an identification with ever dwindling confidence. But instead stop...

    New AX Visio 10x32 binocular

It's more of what I would understand as an "Expert System". It's only as good as how it has been trained (by a human). To me, it doesn't really go beyond programming, and can be disappointing to some degree. However, This was interesting...

    New AX Visio 10x32 binocular

Yes, it would benefit from a similar front end to the binoculars, preferably at slightly less cost: 1*Which species are singing now? 2*Which direction are they coming from? 3*Save the individual sound file No.2 probably needs better microphones than the average smartphone

    New AX Visio 10x32 binocular

Hmm, it's a pity. Just when it starts getting useful it gives up. I mentioned it up thread, but I think the Merlin sound element coupled to a good recording system would have more potential. It's rare that I see something I can't identify in Europe, but I'm always hearing weird calls, or my...

    New AX Visio 10x32 binocular

I suspect it has reached its limit, and the likes of Sykes Warbler for example, that would have a typical UK birder scratching his head, would also have this binocular scratching its camera module? But I may be wrong, would love to see what it makes of rarer warblers in the field. Etc

    New AX Visio 10x32 binocular

And perhaps something more sinister, paranoid and far-fetched to consider: if future taxonomic decisions were biased or influenced towards not having the software and expensive products become less useful haha.

    New AX Visio 10x32 binocular

I wouldn't be happy buying this unless the software behind it was confidently and consistently identifying races. Otherwise the whole product risks becoming obsolete if there is an appetite for splitting, months or years down the line. Plus many other reasons mentioned by others AND, it's just...

You know what. I'm beginning to think that a lot of folk on this Optics section of Birdforum have never done a day's birding in their life. And have little idea about what it actually entails, the different facets etc. Sounds mad I know.

    New AX Visio 10x32 binocular

such a stir possibly because Swarovski have been telling us the importance of lightweight optics for some time now! Would be really good if it shipped with a harness instead of a neck strap. I mean 1kg is the last thing a birder wants round his neck if he is crawling thru bushes pmsl

    New AX Visio 10x32 binocular

And in the spirit of the previous exchange about modern birders not having much stamina, so to speak. Did you get anything above and beyond a Magpie?!

    New AX Visio 10x32 binocular

I suspect a key difference is that today's birders don't walk their dogs across fields for hours, which does sound a lot less effort to be honest.

    New AX Visio 10x32 binocular

It wouldn't be the only source though in this case, just another tool to get you on birds, and point towards the identification / further our identification skills. Sorry, I thought I was being clear I was discussing it being added to the existing features of the Visio's. But these Binoculars...

    New AX Visio 10x32 binocular

I must admit, I forget to use it most of the time, but it highlights a species that is currently singing/calling. I don't think there are many birders who wouldn't want that feature? A smart binocular implementation could probably go some way towards pointing to where the singing bird is!

    New AX Visio 10x32 binocular

Well it makes a change from Swarovski telling us we are going about our hobby wrong because we dare to use a single scope and binocular, instead of having their entire range stashed in the boots of our cars for use depending on whether we are hiking up a mountain, viewing waders from the car...

    New AX Visio 10x32 binocular

Yeah but progress won't stop when you or I start to get a bit dewy eyed about some golden age! You'll still be much better with your accrued knowledge and fieldcraft no matter what technology you are given. It's just that beginners will rely on the advanced tech more heavily.

    New AX Visio 10x32 binocular

Yeah To be honest, I go on overseas trips, don't often use a guide unless for access or safety reasons. I see many species, no doubt miss many species. I think it is this obsession with seeing everything possible that we perhaps need to get beyond. But that's always been my approach, and I'm...

    New AX Visio 10x32 binocular

So it sounds like "no" to my question Edit: but the possibilities are endless. You could be looking thru your binoculars and seeing waypoints of previous sightings! or Live bird news or weather forecasts scrolling by! I'm not sure any of these features are particularly desirable, but all are...

    New AX Visio 10x32 binocular

    It records video without sound?!
  19. P

    New AX Visio 10x32 binocular

Does it have the Merlin Sound identification built in? That would be good, a live stream of heard birds in the vicinity while you look thru the binoculars. It should be all about relegating the phone as well as the camera

    New AX Visio 10x32 binocular

Then I'm sure my personal dream of an augmented thermal image being added to the binocular view at the press of a button will be realised. Instead of having to use a Thermal imaging device, then line up the animal next to a distinctive branch or feature, then carefully switch to binoculars...
