    Norfolk birding

Hi. Does anyone know where the raven hangs out at Horsey, or could it be anywhere in the area? Is there still another at Winterton? Thanks for any gen. Hoping to look tomorrow.

interesting to see what the arguments were against such feeding, I'm glad I've seen some reasoning. I remain somewhat unconvinced, but maybe I'm in the minority here. Would be boring if we all agreed anyway. A couple of points though. Not all garden birds are wintering/resident and in the main...

Not a case of being right or wrong, just different perspectives. Mealworms are insects, and therefore natural. Does this approach include feeding garden birds? Will anyone admit to that here? Migrants will exploit a glut of food to build up fat reserves to continue migration. Those that perish...

Why has there been so much uproar regarding feeding a couple of birds mealworms? It's like a bandwagon suddenly everyone wants to be on. I've never seen so much opposition to such behaviour before on here, on Facebook and on Twitter. I have not seen either of these wheatears nor fed them...

It's come down in price, used to be $120K!

Would be keen for further updates on this. Being Holkham I presume it will be quite hard to see/ covering a big area maybe with a tit flock.

    Norfolk birding

Reported flying south past the obs in the afternoon. It was reported as juv female and the sites are adjacent to each other (though in different counties) so clearly believed to be the same bird. There have been no further reports from the Ouse Washes though the bird started ranging more widely...

I don't think so, of more interest is the colour comparison with male common showing the bird to be spot on (pinkish hue) for TBC. James

Graham I've seen 'wing-barred' common crossbill before but I suspect your bird is a two-barred. Though narrow the G. covert bar has the correct shape (broad on the inner & tapering towards the outer wing), and the width of this in TBC is highly variable. Crossbills have an extended breeding...

Thanks for that. Pallid swift may be the best to hope for in Norfolk, would be enough to lure me up, (especially another of those days where they're everywhere!)

    Norfolk birding

Looks more southerly than easterly so wouldn't get too excited...in fact there's little change in the weather for the next week or so with a large low lingering to the west bringing plenty of rain but not particularly favourable winds. Tempted by the dusky - anyone know how easy/ hard it is to see?

Spent most of the day at Holme yesterday. The bluethroat was exceptionally elusive and I suspect this shot, though poor, is the only one taken. Also a couple of GG shrikes and a probable Pallas's at start of entrance track (called once, not seen). James H

Thanks Penny, leaning towards sunday now, but will have a keen eye on bird news and the weather forecast tomorrow! I'm sure I'll see you up there at some point :t:

    Norfolk birding

I've seen several claimed LTS on the Norfolk coast and have only been happy with one or two personally. The others in my opinion were simply too distant. So either some people are a bit quick to make an i/d or I'm not a very good seawatcher/ can't see much detail. Also I'm pretty sure there are...

It does and it's clearly two-barred, though not a prime specimen. Could it be a 1st summer with reduced wing bars and tertial tips due to wear? Seems a likely explanation. James

    Norfolk birding

Agree that Mark Golley's shots show an obvious two-barred and it must be the same bird. I think it might be forshortening due to the angle of the wing which are making the wing bars look uniformly narrow, rather than overlying coverts (though a few scapular feathers might be obscuring the 1st...

    Norfolk birding

I know photos can be deceptive (and it flies in the face of an apparent mini-irruption of TBC along the Norfolk coast today) but I'd put that bird down as a 'wing-barred' common (and similar to one I saw the Hedgerley two-barred about 10 years ago). Apart from the main issue of the size and...

    Norfolk birding

I can just see the photo now. 'We went to Titchwell for the day and photographed this odd dark seabird on the beach. We think it's a tern of some kind'. Mind you, better that than another (much larger) dark fork-tailed seabird that could still be in British waters. That would really grip me!

It can be no coincidence that yesterday Martin Cade had over 1,000 spot flys at Portland Bill - incredible numbers that gives us some hope for this declining species. Clearly something has triggered a mass arrival! Some details at https://twitter.com/PortlandBirdObs James

Could this be the same bird present at Hunstanton a year or two back? Wasn't that one a Bengal Eagle owl or summat? J

    Norfolk birding

I find that a bit contradictory, surely?! I agree not all features are evident, so surely NOT good for guttata Jim? Having read Paul French's recent comments on the Sussex bird, this bird is clearly in a similar category, showing rather white thighs and vent so perhaps more likely an intergrade...

This must be one of the very few sites in E Anglia I've STILL not visited. But a stoat in ermine might tempt me - was this a one-off sighting or has it been seen regularly? James
