Well unfortunately in this instance Dib Road is a public road and so the RSPB has no say in it's maintenance and is used a lot by heavy goods vehicles and tractors going to the various farms. Indeed it's the farmer who is closest to the car park that is responsible for locking the gate.

This is a warning about Hesketh Out Marsh. Dib Road leading up to the RSPB Car Park is in a shocking state, it looks like it has been shelled by a mortar crew for most of its length. I noted yday that a few people parked at the bottom of Dib Road and walked up rather than drive but space here is...

Yep from those shots it is indeed a male. I think it's the way the light is falling on the head in that first one makes it look like a female. Here's a rough comparison shot with the one at the back being a female. I read about the Avocets on the MM website. They are early!

Great shots as per usual Cliff but your Brambling looks like a female to me.

Does anyone know if Brockholes will be free to visit like Mere Sands or will you have to pay for admission?

Was at Martin Mere yday and the Water Rail was out on the ice in front of Janet Kear again although didn't see it myself and the Whitefronts were viewable from UU again.

I noticed the GWteal on the RBAMap and through a bit of deductive reasoning decided that's where it probably was seen but I just don't understand why that map consistently places some markers a considerable distance from the actual location! Gets very confusing. I've been enjoying the garden...

Must be a foot of snow coming down here! Gonna make the next few days birding very interesting indeed. :D

I connected with one when I was there at the beginning of November. I've been meaning to go to LM for a while, do you want any company tomoz Keith? PS Just checked and there was c.50 Waxwings seen feeding in the car park there today

I didn't get to Ormskirk in the end. Slept in rather late and just headed to the woods instead.

    Lancashire Birding

Not seeing anything on the map but that doesn't mean too much. If you're happy with the intel that they've made it to Ormskirk I might just have to look too. ;) Of course it means abandoning the garden on the off chance they stop by here. :-O

Twite looks a good possibility. Could maybe be Linnets though. Defo not Redpolls or Corn B's.

Had a Brambling in the garden about an hour ago. Right on schedule for this time of year.

I think I probably engaged in a world first this week while staying at Pine Lake, watching telly and a Slavonian Grebe at the same time! :-O Sadly never managed to get any pictures as it never came close enough to shore and stayed on the other side of the lake. Was still there as of yday BTW.

Martin Mere was a raptor fest yday (Sun). It was the norm with the usual Buzzards, Kestrels and the Little Owl on those distant barns then all of a sudden a ringtail Hen Harrier appeared from nowhere and was straight away mobbed by a Merlin then later a Peregrine and a Sparrowhawk also appeared...

Waxwings are indeed surprisingly tolerant of people so long as you don't spook them by approaching too close to them, all birds have their 'comfort zone', you can't really phase them otherwise. Best way is just set up and wait, sooner or later they will come down to feed. You can even shout and...

Seems there was fewer today than was reported yday when I was there. My shots are in my gallery. I think everyone had best keep their eyes open wherever they live as birds seem to be able to pop up anywhere, even if it's just a single one or a handful. If anyone ever sees any or a report of...

A flamin' Ortolan Bunting in Formby today apparently. Might be worth someone taking a chance on tomoz if we're not all completely Waxwing obsessed at the mo. Don't ask me exactly where though cos I don't know.

Well I didn't get to Martin Mere in the end but did go to Moore. If anyone wants to read what happened it's in the Cheshire Forum. Warning though, it ain't good reading.

Actually it was the Dippers. ;) Even if they've already got chicks now though they may have another brood or be in the same place come next year as you know. But my post also served as just another general reminder, those folk will always look to expand their collections in whatever way they...
