    I wondered if the flag could've turned itself inwards or been drastically foreshortened, though--granted--the letter looks nothing like an 'X'.

    You could try reporting it to the BTO: Euring Web Recoveries. It's probably this scheme: Waders | cr-birding, (though, at a stretch, it could also possibly be that one: Waders | cr-birding)--both found via Find a colour-ring project | cr-birding. Anyway, great observation!
