    Just out of interest, how do you evaluate the proportion of "dudes" at a twitch? Personally, beyond the occasional obviously silly comment, I would have no idea since I am not well acquainted with the twitching fraternity. Jason

    Ahem... Well, that claim lasted all of two days, didn't it? Having just seen the bird in (horror!) Somerset I obviously need to rephrase my criteria again. Well we were passing it on our way back from the Oriole and it would have been really naff not to have dropped in, wouldn't it? Jason

    Mine would have to include the likelihood of seeing the bird easily. Not my most important decider by any means, but if I think I'm going to have to stand around all day waiting for the bird to show I'm quite likely to lose interest. You wouldn't catch me going outside Devon for a Dusky Warbler...

    I wonder whether the fact that the queue of people stretched back to Wiltshire put them off. OK I exaggerate, but I've heard a few older twitchers complaining that rare birds just aren't special any more because they're so "available" and that somehow devalues them. Sour grapes? I don't think...
