    How to see Leach's Petrel

35 Leach's and a possible Wilson's from Hilbre today, also a cracking pale adult pom, with complete and intact spoons.

    How to see Leach's Petrel

What do you make of the forecast for tomorrow? Overnight we seem to have WSW force 5, then for the rest of the day WNW force 8. Obviously there are Leach's out there because some are being reported. I'm wondering if Crosby might be better than North Wirral? I'm thinking of giving the greater...

    How to see Leach's Petrel

I think you're in with a decent chance, according to Bird guides there's been 8 off Leasowe today and 5 off New Brighton. They're often seen leaving the Mersey from New Brighton in the early morning, dawn would be best but you'll just have to hope that one lingers off shore for a while. Winds...

    How to see Leach's Petrel

Three in mouth of the Mersey at Perch Rock New Brighton at first light, then another four from the lifeguard guard station at 7:30am.

    How to see Leach's Petrel

I didn't see much out at sea at Crosby. Just the odd distant gannet and a possible skua. Nice on the beach though, lots of Grey Plover, some in summer plumage, Knots and Sanderling.

    How to see Leach's Petrel

It's picked up here considerably since I asked the question. I'm off to Crosby, I'll let you know how I get on.

    How to see Leach's Petrel

What's the wind doing there? It's barely moving the trees here.

    How to see Leach's Petrel

Thanks for that Jane. With work beckoning I'm going to need to get out today, in the evening during the week, or hope it lasts until next weekend. I was thinking Crosby Hall Road might be a good bet today, and maybe head up to north Wirral tomorrow and Tuesday after work. Not much sign of a...

    How to see Leach's Petrel

Just back from Hilbre, 3 Leach's Petrels, 1-2 Bonxie, 1 Manx Shearwater, a few Arctic Skuas, 3 Fulmar, Red throated Divers.

    How to see Leach's Petrel

What do you think about the chances of a few sea birds this weekend? It's a 9m tide at midday Saturday, with the met office forecasting 24mph west north westerly, gusting to 42mph. Could the consolation prize for the peep watchers be a few Leach's Petrels, or is the direction not quite right...

    How to see Leach's Petrel

I managed to see the bird on Pennington Flash just before it left last night. It was my second for the flash, meaning that I've now seen more Leach's Petrels at Pennington Flash than I have at Leasowe! Just one of those things, I don't really go to Leasowe for petrels and when I do I'm usually...

    How to see Leach's Petrel

9th July 1995 I saw a Leach's Petrel on Pennington Flash on a balmy summers afternoon, with not a breath of wind. It was flying around, apparently quite happily. I don't remember there being any strong winds at all in the lead up to its arrival. How weird, a real Penny Flash blocker...

    How to see Leach's Petrel

Just wondering if we might be in for a decent seawatch over the weekend in the Irish Sea. The chart's looking reasonable for Saturday (ok, perhaps more westerly than north westerly, but at least it's the first serious blow for a while). The tide's not bad either 11:34am at Liverpool and 8.79m...

    How to see Leach's Petrel

Believe me we tried..... I've almost lost the ability to focus in my right eye after so long straining through the scope on 60x! ;) Unfortunately it wasn't to be.

    How to see Leach's Petrel

We had a better than expected seawatch from Hilbre today, with 12 Leach's Petrels, including one which came past very close, seven Bonxies, probably about 25 Arctic Skuas and a single Sabine's Gull (which I didn't see). I did however see the Sabine's Gull at Meols later in the day.

    How to see Leach's Petrel

Dunno yet. Hopefully I'll have a better idea by the end of tomorrow ;) Usually it's a scope job, but they can be very close. A few years back, I had one fly so close it's wing touched my leg! Usually a bit further out than that though. Many people get good photos of Leach's Petrel, but I don't...

    How to see Leach's Petrel

Bird guides reporting six Leach's Petrels past New Brighton by 10:35, also Sooty Shearwater, 10 Manx Shearwaters and 2 Great Skuas. Also Sabine's Gull past Wallasey at 10:55. It's starting to look good :t:

    How to see Leach's Petrel

I didn't manage to get to New Brighton yesterday. I might get chance tonight though. I see that there was a Balearic Shearwater off New Brighton at 8:15 this morning, (which is about four hours before high tide, so closer to low tide). The winds look like they might be easing a bit for...

    How to see Leach's Petrel

I don't think that time of day is an issue, though Jane will know a lot better than me. I've seen them all times of day, including evening. High tide at Liverpool is 12:39 on Saturday, so about 12:25 on the north Wirral coast. If you wanted to be on Hilbre for the tide, you need to start...

    How to see Leach's Petrel

Neither have I. At least not in the UK. Lets hope one goes past on Saturday.

    How to see Leach's Petrel

Thanks for that Jane. When you say they might be on offer tonight, it will obviously be low tide at about 6pm. Are there chances of seeing them at low tide? If so, where would you recommend? I'll be on Wirral later, so I might call in somewhere. I'll almost certainly be heading out to Hilbre...

    How to see Leach's Petrel

The forecast is for the wind to increase overnight, but then gradually die down tomorrow. I might try Crosby, but it will be at first light because I've got a busy day tomorrow with other things. It will be 3 or 4 hours before high tide, but at Crosby the tide doesn't go all that far out, and...

    How to see Leach's Petrel

Just been for a walk around Eccleston Mere and nearly got blown off my feet, so it looks reasonable at the moment. I look forward to hearing the tales from those who go. There's not many birding experiences more exhilarating than a good sea watch, ideally on Hilbre with the waves crashing over...

    How to see Leach's Petrel

Nope, don't think I'll take you up on that because you're almost certainly correct. However, Heysham to Hilbre is a large percentage of the coastline of England and one Leach's Petrel is little more than a large hirundine a mile out to sea! Colin

    How to see Leach's Petrel

I wouldn't like to say that any day is odds on for Leach's Petrel. Some years they don't come (or hardly come), even when the weather looks ideal. Also, for good numbers you really need a few days of wind. Sitting here in Merseyside as I type, no more than 10 miles from the mouth of the Mersey...
