Is it really that straightforward? That neck collar looks remarkably distinct, and although difficult to see, the underside of inner primaries look pale tipped to me. Unfortunately, I don't have any literature to hand, and I'll comment more when I've had a chance to remind myself of some...

I recall getting quite excited when I heard one calling just after dark near Alderford Common a couple of years ago. Until I remembered where I was....

There was certainly a pair regularly frequenting the Little Egret colony at Holkham in 2008. Don't know if they bred successfully.

It's from a forthcoming paper in BB. A bit more on David Norgate's blog

Some of you may recall the rather curious choice the Norfolk Wildlife Trust made when choosing which species to feature on the cover of their glossy membership leaflet. Interestingly enough, I stumbled across this even more curious piece on the legendary LGRE's blog, suggesting perhaps that...

Hi all Hope the Norfolk birding is still as good as ever. However, if any of fancy a change and are interested in following my latest birding adventures since moving to Cornwall have a look at: http://piratebirding.blogspot.com/. I've ditched the old website as it was a bit too demanding to...

Amazing - would have loved to see that despite the gore! Post the pics! Didn't do much birding, but neverthess made a gem of a discovery - the boat restaurant/bar in Wells harbour. Popped below deck for a swift half on Sunday afternoon only to discover a Frank Zappa look a like playing a bass...

Nothing too exciting - just 2 Blacks at Hickling as well as the 3 white spp. Quite likely to be the same birds I saw. I've submitted the sightings to the Euring website - will provide details if I find out more. Cheers Ilya

Odds and sods around East Norfolk yesterday. Excellent views of a couple of short-eared owls (sorry guys - can't give out the location as they would suffer from disturbance), 19 Cranes near Waxham and the Ross's Goose in the flock of Pinkies at Horsey as per the pager. The Cranes starting to get...

Thanks James. Interesting. Hopefully I'll get details of where they were "collared", although the light was fading and I'm not sure I read all the letters correctly. Stop press: I can just this second hear a flock of Whoopers over. A new one for the house list!

Damn - but nice one! I checked there on Thursday as this is a good spot for them, but there wasn't one. Did it have a colour ring? There was a ringed one of dubious origin knocking around a few months back (but not since). It's a regular site for presumed genuine ones too!

Took a walk around The Ted Ellis Reserve today in the vague hope that one of Penduline Tits had also decided to avoid the crowds and fly over the river. No joy, but I did hear and see a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. With one at Strumpshaw and Buckenham Carrs last year could this be a sign they're...

Hi Robert If you submit your sighting here you can find out exactly where it came from Ilya

Possibly a bit of both. I think rudd form a major part of their diet at this time of year and rudd aren't that tolerent of water much below 10 degrees C, so may have experienced a bit of a die-off or movement towards deeper, warmer water. That said, I suspect quite a few undergone cold weather...

    Norfolk birding

I've been wondering whether there are unusually high numbers in at the moment, possibly due to cold weather conditions on the continent in the past few weeks. I've stumbled into three in as many days birding, two in rather unusual places. This is not far short of the number I see in a year usually!

Yup, all in all a very good day out. Almost (but not quite) up there with a late September fall on Blakeney Point....

No Canvasbacks;-( Nor Lesser Scaup. Surely only a matter of time before this gets to Norfolk though.....

Diving duck bonanza in the broads today with 5 Aythya species almost in the same scope view! Also nearby: an Iceland Gull, a Mealy Redpoll, 25 Bewick's Swans and another cracking view of a Bittern. Good to go birding in the eastern hinterlands away from the pagering masses, and still see some...

James - I've just messaged you about access to Bawburgh, with the telephone number of person to contact. Steve - glad you had a productive goose session in Norfolk. Good work with the shrike! all - intending to revamp the website soon, but with changed emphasis as I will be moving to Cornwall...

Bittern at Bawburgh Lakes this afternoon - only my second in the patch, the last being one at UEA in '94! Also Smew still at Whitlingham and Bittern & Smew at my work patch (Nunnery Lakes) on Friday. Seems to be the only birds I can find these days.....

I blame myself partly for drawing attention to Santon last year, but I have to say I was very disappointed with the amount of disturbance occurring on the site in February and March. Almost every time I went there was at least five or six people, especially at weekends and a lot of people seemed...

Finding Lesser Spots A lot of people seem to dip this species, but I seem to have a reasonable success (I've seen 7 in Norfolk in the last year or so). I'm not trying to teach grannies to suck eggs here, and I stand to be corrected, but I wonder if part of the reason people dip them, is they...

    Norfolk birding

Signs that the "freeze" conditions might be bringing a bit of stuff in today, with a redhead smew & a bittern on the patch (Nunnery Reserve). Bittern's been there for a few days at least though. BTW the Black Lark arrived after about a week of screaming easterlies straight from the steppes of...

That sounds like an incredible sight even without an Ivory Gull!!! As you say, got to be worth a shot for a white-winged gull of some sort. Thanks for the tip-off. I can see myself booking half a day off work this week, partly to have a look through them, but as much just to witness the spectacle

That's really quite odd, which year was it? I wonder what the winds were doing further north or had been doing the previous days? James - the Purple Sand was a flyby, but I suspect it was a local bird. The groynes were getting covered by the waves. Quite a lot of waders going past, but I got...
