Yeah....Not quite the same in late November. Sunrise was at about 10 AM and sunset at about 4 PM.

    Shanghai Perambulations

I've been to Iceland but in November, so much of what I could suggest probably wouldn't apply to June. Plus it wasn't a birding trip, but I do remember getting the @#$% scared out of me by a ptarmigan at a lava cave somewhere near Reykjavik, so getting out into the interior could be "fun." Re...

Yeah, yeah. There was one last November less than a mile from where I'm sitting right now. :smoke: Just kidding. Great bird and great shot, Kevin. :t:

There's a Holiday Inn at Nanhui and a couple other hotels at Dishui Lake. maybe that's what they meant? You can get to within a few miles of the shoreline and the reedbeds at Nanhui via Line 16 the Shanghai metro system. Take that to the Dishui Lake (Dishui Hu) station at the end of the line...

Wow. Glad to hear you're safe, Kevin. Sitting on the S20 in the dark fixing a flat has got to be unnerving at best.

A true China survival story. I saw online that there are future plans to extend the Shanghai Metro to Hengsha. That doesn't bode well for the birding either.

No oil in Japan. The bridge is to the Phillipines and then Malaysia. They can say it's to protect all the overseas Chinese.

Good lord...I remember that road from our visit 2½ weeks ago. That was where all the birds were! That area is so screwed.

Nice mix of buntings, Kevin. Not sure I want to see the pictures of the "development."

    Shanghai Perambulations

There are a couple of entrances. The ones I'm aware of are on the east side of the garden and the hillside is on the west side. I don't know if there are any entrances on the far side of the hill.

West Lake will be shoulder-to-shoulder people, especially on the NW and NE sides. I had some luck 1st thing in the morning in the SW corner, but once past about 10:00 it'll be too crowded. The botanic garden can be quite nice. Head for the hillside on the far side from the entrance. I also...

I took a quick afternoon walk in Century Park after arriving in Shanghai today. Nothing really out of the ordinary, although the sheer number of white wagtails of all ages and sexes near the football pitch was pretty astounding. From what I could tell, they were all ssp. leucopsis. The full...

No, that would be the S. China Sea.

That parrotbill has a look on his face that says "I know something you don't know!" Just sayin' B (:

From ChongmingDao to Nanhui in one birding day? That's a long day, indeed!

    Shanghai Perambulations

Congrats on the stork, Kevin. Good bird for Shanghai!

    Shanghai Perambulations

I agree with Dev on the black-faced bunting, Kevin. And in post #422, yes, peregrine.

    Shanghai Perambulations

    I love the tailorbird shot!

    Shanghai Perambulations

That shot of the spoonbill looks so clear it almost looks like you photoshopped the bird into the background! Nice pic, Kevin.

FWIW, the Alexandrine parakeets in Kowloon Park are not native - they're feral. Some people count 'em, some people don't.

Interesting. Clements lists p.c.commixtus as being in "S China (south of the Yangtze) to Hong Kong and e Tonkin" in addition to hainanus.

    Shanghai Perambulations

And Clements splits them three ways - Siberia, Japan, Korea and Northern China is Japanese Tit. South of the Chang Jiang west to Guizhou/Guangxi is Cinereous Tit.
  24. Jeff Hopkins

    Shanghai Perambulations

Hey Kevin, Japanese tit was a lifer? That's the common "great tit" in northern China (at least according to Clements). You probably even get some in Shanghai in the winter. Unless the authority you use splits out the Japanese island supspecies as a separate species, I think you're probably...
