Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

Hi Joseph here's some more info-hopefully helpful. A couple of days ago I paid a short visit to Craigendarroch and Burn o'Vat. Of course I was hampered by my current inability to walk more than a few hundred metres without falling over, and it was a very windy day. I saw nothing that you...

There were about a dozen Sand Martins yesterday at Mill of Strachan (thanks for the heads up Paul) and small numbers at Inchgarth Reservoir Cults. Loch of Skene is usually a good place to find them but I haven't looked there yet.

here's the best of mine. Not enough light for anything better. This was at 10.46, when were you there Mark?

Lovely photos Mark. Maybe worth mentioning for anyone still to see the Smew, today it was on the smaller, upper pond. Contrary to Joseph's experience, I found her rather nervous, maybe because she felt more hemmed in than in the main pool. I've some photos too which I'm off to process shortly.

Yes, very sad indeed. I owe him a lot too as will many others.

Not a lot to be seen today on the Ythan estuary, but this swan flypast was nice. Probably the most interesting thing was meeting Joseph and discussing all things avian and photographic.

First winter Iceland Gull late yesterday afternoon in Peterhead harbour. Sorry for the delayed posting, been tied up most of the day. Now, what will the next few days' north winds bring?

Balmedie Country Park was also quite good today, in the trees and bushes around the car park. Lots of Goldcrests, Song Thrushes, Blackbirds, Redwings, Stonechats, Reed Buntings, 2 male Blackcaps and a few singing Skylarks. Oh, and a drum and percussion ensemble that suddenly started up and had...

I tried again, not expecting to see it, so I wasn't disappointed when I didn't. But if I hadn't gone there I would have missed seeing the 4 Spoonbills on the Ythan, at the Snub.

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

I went looking last Tuesday, found the field, not a bird in sight. Which doesn't mean a thing of course knowing me. Might try again today.

Three Spoonbills today on the Ythan, at The Snub. Wonder where the fourth one is? And at least two Surf Scoters in the scoter flock at Blackdog. Couldn't find any Velvet Scoters, but the swell was making it quite difficult.

Might be a good idea to get there before mid-day otherwise you'll be looking into the light. I'm sure it wasn't there when I was looking about 10.30 although apparently it was later. Maybe it commutes to the nearby Loch of Loirston - now there's a challenge! The pool is certainly attracting...

I'm so happy that you two saw the Temminck's Stint at Rigifa Pool today. (Looks in vain for a sarcasm emoticon).* I was there about mid afternoon and failed to see it. Must have been sleeping behind a blade of grass. Actually I was just having a very bad day. I also missed the Monty's by...

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

I was at Strathbeg yesterday and was lucky enough to "refind" the mystery little wader. Previous views had been obscured by vegetation and very inconclusive, then it came a bit closer and more out in the open. Great debate followed and much consulting of Collins. Was it a Temminck's Stint or...

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

Today I spotted two Ptarmigan from the car park at Glenshee Ski Centre. They were quite high up on the Cairnwell, among the scree patches. Also a few Red Grouse lower down by the road. If anyone is keen to try here, they may need a bit of patience. I sat in the car and watched the slopes for...

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

Well, that's me back from Norfolk and just about recovered from 6 twelve hour days solid birding. Nightingales singing, 12 Hobbies, 25 Yellow Wagtails, Marsh and Willow Tits, Reed Warblers and a Montagu's Harrier. Has anyone else heard a Cuckoo here this year? My wife heard one last Saturday...

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

Got my first Whimbrel of the year yesterday feeding on the mussel beds at the Ythan estuary. Off to Norfolk tomorrow for a week - hope I don't miss too much here.

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

Black-tailed Godwits still at Tarland hide. 40 Pinkfeet flew in and drank lots of water - must be thirsty work flying into a head wind. Loads of Sand Martins at Loch Davan, and a Common Sandpiper on the Dee at Dinnet bridge.
