There were about a dozen Sand Martins yesterday at Mill of Strachan (thanks for the heads up Paul) and small numbers at Inchgarth Reservoir Cults. Loch of Skene is usually a good place to find them but I haven't looked there yet. -

Lovely photos Mark. Maybe worth mentioning for anyone still to see the Smew, today it was on the smaller, upper pond. Contrary to Joseph's experience, I found her rather nervous, maybe because she felt more hemmed in than in the main pool. I've some photos too which I'm off to process shortly. -

Balmedie Country Park was also quite good today, in the trees and bushes around the car park. Lots of Goldcrests, Song Thrushes, Blackbirds, Redwings, Stonechats, Reed Buntings, 2 male Blackcaps and a few singing Skylarks. Oh, and a drum and percussion ensemble that suddenly started up and had... -

I tried again, not expecting to see it, so I wasn't disappointed when I didn't. But if I hadn't gone there I would have missed seeing the 4 Spoonbills on the Ythan, at the Snub. -

Three Spoonbills today on the Ythan, at The Snub. Wonder where the fourth one is? And at least two Surf Scoters in the scoter flock at Blackdog. Couldn't find any Velvet Scoters, but the swell was making it quite difficult. -

I was at Strathbeg yesterday and was lucky enough to "refind" the mystery little wader. Previous views had been obscured by vegetation and very inconclusive, then it came a bit closer and more out in the open. Great debate followed and much consulting of Collins. Was it a Temminck's Stint or... -

Today I spotted two Ptarmigan from the car park at Glenshee Ski Centre. They were quite high up on the Cairnwell, among the scree patches. Also a few Red Grouse lower down by the road. If anyone is keen to try here, they may need a bit of patience. I sat in the car and watched the slopes for... -

Well, that's me back from Norfolk and just about recovered from 6 twelve hour days solid birding. Nightingales singing, 12 Hobbies, 25 Yellow Wagtails, Marsh and Willow Tits, Reed Warblers and a Montagu's Harrier. Has anyone else heard a Cuckoo here this year? My wife heard one last Saturday... -

Got my first Whimbrel of the year yesterday feeding on the mussel beds at the Ythan estuary. Off to Norfolk tomorrow for a week - hope I don't miss too much here. -

Black-tailed Godwits still at Tarland hide. 40 Pinkfeet flew in and drank lots of water - must be thirsty work flying into a head wind. Loads of Sand Martins at Loch Davan, and a Common Sandpiper on the Dee at Dinnet bridge. -

12 summer plumaged black-tailed Godwits today at the Tarland hide, along with over 400 Black-headed Gulls, Lapwings, Redshanks, Oystercatchers, Teal and Swallows.
