    Well, I've made many stupid mistakes in my time on BirdForum, but even I am not stupid enough to challenge Lou Salomon on a gull ID. So, congratulations on finding this bird. I live in Nara, which is a long way from the sea, and so I rarely see gulls, much less spend days looking for rareties...

    Could someone explain why this is Glaucous-winged rather than Glaucous? In Olsen's 'Gulls' and all the other books I have, Glaucous-winged with this plumage has an all-black bill. But this bird has a bill with a black tip but otherwise pale, which all the books including Olsen show for Glaucous...
