    I need a bicycle - Need suggestions

Good points, Angelan! I used to use the "saddle-bag" type bag over the back-carrier, to carry kit including a travelscope and binos. To protect them, I lined the saddle-bags with plastic "Bubble-Wrap" from delivery boxes, which I fixed in place with glue and duct-tape! Just in case I fell off...

    I need a bicycle - Need suggestions

I confess to being a Neanderthal. I´ve never had a bike with disc-brakes...I reckon, I can repair my own V-brakes, so I´ll stick with those. I may have misled you about the Giant FCR, they seem to have racing-style wheels, which would be too narrow to go "off-road". I said avoid electric-assist...

    I need a bicycle - Need suggestions

Here´s a link to Giant FCR bikes, starting at about 450 euro. http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-gb/bikes/road/2431/32466/ The Giant website uses the word "hybrid" a bit differently....their "hybrid" section involves only two models, that are actually rather expensive "electric assist" bikes...

Never seen the Nishiki, but just googled it and the specs look great. Do you really need that much bike, though? I think bikes are like binoculars...after a certain price, the incremental improvements are very, very slight indeed. I´d really go for a Trek, and save the extra cash for your binos...

    I need a bicycle - Need suggestions

For birding on roads and fairly smooth forest paths, I use a Fuji Silhouette. Any hybrid will do. For 500 euro, you´ll get a perfectly good hybrid for this purpose in any make. Giant, IMHO, do the best value at this kind of price point, with decent Shimano Ultegra drivetrain etc. If you want to...
