    10X42L IS Pros/cons...

WOW, 100+oz (about 3K grams) around the neck for a days birding excursion...You Da Man, Chuck! :t: Except for the slow focus speed (900 degrees CF to Inf.), the 10X42L IS could easily be my main birding instrument. However, I can see my FL 7X42 augmenting a search, then switching to my...

    10X42L IS Pros/cons...

Great news, Richard! Nice to hear others enjoying and appreciating their optical prowess. If one can get by their ergonomic quirks, the on going optical rewards of the Canon 10X42L IS are many and the areas of application very diverse! :t: Appreciate the link to the "X-Rite Color Test", very...

    10X42L IS Pros/cons...

Richard, If you mean quite well lit, as in a very high contrast area, even I'd expect to notice some form of CA. Without a pic, very hard to determine what were the lighting dynamics of the overall scene. Personally, I can see with regular vision substantial CA on the water while fishing and...

    10X42L IS Pros/cons...

Richard, I believe your professional career in photography and printing services uniquely qualifies your observations and opinions in the optical realm. I shot semi-pro for 2-3 years around 2005 and greatly appreciated that I had Much to learn, but had no guidance or mentoring and consequently...

    10X42L IS Pros/cons...

Hello Richard & Welcome to BF! :hi: I was dismayed as I read of your dilemma. Fortunately, either I'm not sensitive to CA or haven't purchased binos whose optics are prone to it. As you may have read in post #101, my corrected eyesight appears to facilitate a visual anomaly whereas I experience...

    10X42L IS Pros/cons...

These above mentioned Lithiums Are the way to go. I now have 35+ hours of 10x42L "IS field usage" and my 1st set of these Energizers are holding at 1.75V (haven't used in a few days). They posses outstanding shelf life, extreme cold temp performance and plenty of power to spare with the Canon...

    10X42L IS Pros/cons...

Good deal, Chuck. I use my right index finger for focus and right middle finger for IS activation. Love the 5-minute IS stretch and usually very surprised when it times out...wish it could be adjusted for longer periods of steady use. Spent a couple of hours this morning in direct comparison...

    10X42L IS Pros/cons...

You're welcome Chuck. Their slow focus (2.75 turns "CF to Infinity") is challenging while scanning for and chasing birds, but the smaller diameter focus wheel still allows me to make fairly quick adjustments and ID's when needed. Due to My IPD (61 to 62), I see 3D depth relatively equal to any...

    10X42L IS Pros/cons...

Chuck, Seems like a real mixed bag of performances, huh. Their ergonomics are so different from "normal" roofs (with their bulkiness, extra heft, slow focus speed and lack of high-end handling), their acceptance are somewhat taken-back with the overall quirkiness and handling. It has taken me...

    10X42L IS Pros/cons...

Good point, BA. The 10x42L IS I kept easily gives tri-pod stability when held steady, totally eliminating any micro movement that I see in non-IS hand-holding with these, or any of my 10X binos. Possibly the pair I returned were hand tuned by an individual who's body pulses or nerve controls...

    10X42L IS Pros/cons...

Binastro, It does "appear" an anomaly with my vision. It is a little puzzling as I see no similar double focus characteristics in any of my bino investments, and never have before in the multiple units I've had the pleasure to casually glass with. I had my cataract surgeries 2 years ago and the...

    10X42L IS Pros/cons...

Oh Well.... The new 10x42L IS was delivered Thursday 19th. To my dismay, this pair also displays My described "two independent sharp focal points that are set about 50-60 degrees apart". I had my best half look through both the original and the new binos...she Does Not detect Any dual sharp...

    10X42L IS Pros/cons...

Binastro, IS off (or On)-Any orientation-Any focal distance-Perfect diopter setting (still@ Zero)=Exactly the same dual sharp focus points about 50-60 degrees apart between focus adjustments! :-C "Spurious effects" are Extremely minimal in Any viewing configuration (IS on - right side...

    10X42L IS Pros/cons...

Great point, Maico! I did check the diopter setting (just like you suggest), which for me is zero adjustment. What ever focal point range I'm aiming for, both barrels are either equally sharp or equally OOF. Thanks, Ted

    10X42L IS Pros/cons...

RB Reservoir...Sure is! We usually head on up to French Camp and the Chapel Hill Wildlife Mng. area...Beautiful hard wood and pine forest regions with bountiful birding and wildlife! How did your 10x42L's work out, Chuck? Ted

    10X42L IS Pros/cons...

Hi Kimmo, Thanks for your suggestions. Maybe to be a little clearer, the "60 degree variance of sharpness" comes during close to infinity or inf. to close focusing. When I hit a sharp image, then continue in the Same direction with the focus wheel, I'll go through 60 degrees more of turning...

    10X42L IS Pros/cons...

Good & Bad! Firstly, the Good! Back on the Natchez Trace this past weekend. Wow, when I needed the details, it was all there. I know the Pileated Woodpecker is a regular sight along the SE Trace, but my first spotting was a stunning 20-24" female (HUGE) from about 100m away as she was easily...

    10X42L IS Pros/cons...

Agreed HN, With Great Optics plus IS control, they also seem to be my "go-to" birding\outdoors instrument of choice! If\when Canon introduces overall optical\weight\focus improvements, they could become one of the top 10X choices in the market place! Ted

    10X42L IS Pros/cons...

Hermann, I'm lucky with equal eyesight...all of my optics need no diopter corrections! However, It would be great if in a Mark II release they would increase that range of adjustment to accommodate more users! Ted

    10X42L IS Pros/cons...

JR, Over the past 6 weeks, mine have been out in the rain, on dusty shell roads in an open 4-wheel Ranger, frigid mid-teen temperatures, around my neck for 8-10 hrs a day and have come through unscathed! They got dirty, dusty, cold and were bounced around a bit, but haven't missed a sighting...

    10X42L IS Pros/cons...

IMO, it doesn't matter who does or doesn't use the Canon 10x42L IS. For me hand-holding and with IS engaged, I can read 6mm (1\4") courier-new font type from 100m away! :eek!: Not sure what this means in resolution analysis (I'll let the optical experts compute that out as far as the details)...

    10X42L IS Pros/cons...

Like Bruce, I also replaced the included alkalines with new "20yr. shelf life" Energizer AA lithium's. Had No trouble this past weekend with 16 deg F cold weather. Their "new" 1.8 beginning voltage dropped to just 1.73V after 20hrs in the field (about 20% of IS usage). Cost of the lithium can be...
