Ultravid 7x/8x 42 pre-HD, HD, HDplus transmission figures

Ad hoc I was certainly not questioning your experience but trying to make sense of it. We are visiting a nature reserve with some mature woodland this weekend and I will have several binos with me and I will give this a try. Lee

Ultravid 7x/8x 42 pre-HD, HD, HDplus transmission figures

I am more inclined to think that shifting cloud thicknesses in the far distances and randomly moving tree leaves closer-by led to a burst of brighter light just as the bigger binos were used giving the false impression that this was something to do with the binos. Lee

Ultravid 7x/8x 42 pre-HD, HD, HDplus transmission figures

OK I get it now but it still sounds odd because I am sure that other more knowledgable members have posted that your pupil closes down almost instantaneously given a burst of light. And you are right about 'blaming the sky', it does indeed sound like a sage oriental saying :king: Lee

Ultravid 7x/8x 42 pre-HD, HD, HDplus transmission figures

I expressed myself badly adhoc, apologies for not being clear. I was referring to the way you blamed the problem on the brightness of the sky affecting your eyes: Quote: "the sky behind is too bright for the user's eyes with the larger model". Lee

Ultravid 7x/8x 42 pre-HD, HD, HDplus transmission figures

That seems odd because your pupils will close down to their minimum in light as bright as this no matter which bino you are looking through. Lee

Ultravid 7x/8x 42 pre-HD, HD, HDplus transmission figures

The idea about a bino that is so bright it washes all the colours out seems to me to stem from an imagined connection with what over-exposed photographs look like. This notion ignores that most binos pass only 90% of light (plus or minus a few percent) which means looking through binos is like...

Ultravid 7x/8x 42 pre-HD, HD, HDplus transmission figures

Ultravid transmission graphs by Gijs Hi Jerry Here are the ones that I have been able to find. No 10x though. Measured transmissions are the average of a number of measured spectra, error margin is +/- 0,5%. Many thanks to Gijs van Ginkel for making his test results available and to Jan van...

Ultravid 7x/8x 42 pre-HD, HD, HDplus transmission figures

Indeed although I was referring to his interpretation of his own test results. Isn't the human eye most sensitive to light at 555nm? It is quite possible, or even likely, that some eyes are more sensitive than others at this point in the spectrum. Lee

Ultravid 7x/8x 42 pre-HD, HD, HDplus transmission figures

Gijs clearly interprets his test results differently. Lee

Tom To me HT looks a tiny bit warmer (think Autumn) where to me SF looks a wee bit cleaner (think Spring) but we are getting into the realms of such subtleties here that we will end up describing binos in pretentious 'wine-critic' language if we are not careful. I have no idea how many SFs...

Ultravid 7x/8x 42 pre-HD, HD, HDplus transmission figures

We were recently on holiday on Ardnamurchan in Scotland and for two days there was a thick haar (sea-fog) which was so bad that some ferry ships were unable to sail. I spent hours using my SFs and other binos from Meopta and Opticron and did not see any green colour in the fog when using the...

Thank you for clarifying. You can imagine how puzzling this is for those who do not see this. Lee

Ultravid 7x/8x 42 pre-HD, HD, HDplus transmission figures

Andreas To help us understand what you see are we correct that you mean any green parts in the view seem 'stronger' than other colours and that you do not mean that the whole image looks a little green? This is what I understand from you saying you feel the green parts most clearly. Lee

Ultravid 7x/8x 42 pre-HD, HD, HDplus transmission figures

My use of the phrase 'cartoon-like' was probably over-emphasising the point to get it across. Leicas do not really deliver a cartoon-like view. Lee

Ultravid 7x/8x 42 pre-HD, HD, HDplus transmission figures

My perception is that Leica displays reds slightly stronger than I see the reds with the naked eye, Swaro does the same with blue but to a lesser extent (we really are splitting very thin hairs at this point) and to an even lesser extent Zeiss shows green a tiny bit stronger. But sometimes...

Ultravid 7x/8x 42 pre-HD, HD, HDplus transmission figures

Prof. Gijs van Ginkel who has measured the light transmission of SF (and whose test results have been verified by the major European brands) has stated several times on Bird Forum that his results do not support the perception of such a cast. It therefore seems likely this perception stems from...

Ultravid 7x/8x 42 pre-HD, HD, HDplus transmission figures

Tom I can quite understand as I used to be exactly the same about spiders but with a lot of effort during the 1980s I acclimatised to them and now have no problem handling them. This is an instinctive reaction built-in to our psyche for good evolutionary reasons: survival. Lee

Tom Troubadoris, my Mrs, has a non Plus Ultravid HD 8x32 and its as sharp as anything but there can be variations from unit to unit as with any product. Somtimes the problem can be slightly hazed lenses that reduce contrast and so give the impression of a low resolution so after giving the...

Ultravid 7x/8x 42 pre-HD, HD, HDplus transmission figures

Forgive me for suggesting something very basic but do check the dioptre setting. The setting you need can vary over time and you have probably worked out already that if you need plus 1 on one bino it doesn't mean plus 1 will work on all binos. Lee
