    New scope from Zeiss...

What about low light/overcast etc.? Do you feel it's limiting with the 2.5 mm exit pupil?

    New scope from Zeiss...

At what magnification is the question. At smaller mag the exit pupil is actually larger for the Kowa. But transmission is probably a bit lower in the Kowa. If the Harpia 95 comes close to the Kowa 883 in CA performance at higher mags I will be surprised. Where the Kowa usually shines is at long...

Light transmission and color rendition are better in modern scopes, including the Meopta S2.

"The name "Oberkochen" consists of the two German words "ober"; meaning "above" or "upper" and "Kocher"; the name of the local river. The name indicates, that this settlement lies above the river Kocher or on its upper part, which makes sense, because the river Kocher has its spring right to the...

    New scope from Zeiss...

Here is a rather new video on the the Harpia. There are some info on the optics in there that might be of interest. Some of it might be "controversial". What is not said on Zeiss homepage, but in the video is that HT-glass is used in the Harpia. Maybe not that surprising? Also the "base plate"...

    New scope from Zeiss...

A bit OT but, increasing number of lens elements seems to be the new normal in camera lenses. All the latest Nikon telephoto prime lenses have at least 16 elements, the 800mm lens has as many as 20. When it comes to zooms the brand new Nikon 180-400mm zoom have 27 elements in 19 groups. And...

    New scope from Zeiss...

A few scopes have had a foot that fits directly into some smaller Manfrotto video heads. Might be handy, but the Harpia is too long and heavy to be a good match to those quite small heads in my opinion. All serious video heads that can take heavier gear have sliding plates of some sort (the 200...

    New scope from Zeiss...

Interesting/puzzling that Zeiss now seem to have removed the info on exit-pupil in the specs. https://www.zeiss.com/sports-optics/en_de/nature/spotting-scopes/victory-harpia-spektiv.html#technical-data

    New scope from Zeiss...

Harpia scope will probably be similar to the photoscope (see photo below) so there will be more elements in there compared to a conventional spotting scope. Coatings and glass are so good these days so transmission will probably not suffer much, but will be interesting to see and I hope they put...

Latest info from Zeiss on the Harpia scope says "available in August (2018)".

    New scope from Zeiss...

The focus wheel of the Harpia is according to specs and videos of dual-speed type, so at small movements you get fine focus, and with more turning it's faster geared. (there's a video with Jerry Dobbler from Zeiss explaining it in the thread) But would be nice to hear about how it works in...

    New scope from Zeiss...

Troub, nice cliff-hanger...:t: I did some calculus and found that the Harpia will have a 42m FOV/1000m at 43.5x magnification. Most scopes with good zoom EP:s have around 40-42m FOV at 25x mag.. I suspect the Harpia will be a very nice scope for sea watching, if the max aperture is not...

    New scope from Zeiss...

Exit pupil of 2.5 mm would make it one f-stop "darker" than competition. About the same as my ATS65 at 25x, seems to be a high price to pay for a 85/95mm scope... Would an internal smaller stop improve the edge sharpness at lower mag? The huge FOV would be pretty meaningless if it's not sharp...

    New scope from Zeiss...

All larger alpha-scopes is above 3000€, at least around here, so it's not a huge price difference to ATX or Kowa for example. And price in stores might be a bit lower than recommended price. And the scope will last for 25 years so the cost per month will be lower than cable TV, candy...

Must be an error. It's more like 3.9. No mention on light transmission either.

    New scope from Zeiss...

The links posted so far is working fine... Big AFOV is not always a good thing, especially if wearing glasses and the ER is not enough. But the diameter of the EP-glass looks pretty large so hopefully it will be usable with glasses also, and as good as in the SF bins. What worries the most is...

    New scope from Zeiss...

Thanks! Separate zoom ring on body. DualSpeed focuser. 72 AFOV through the whole zoom range! 63-21 m/1000m FOV for 85mm model (22–65x mag). 59-19.5 m/1000m FOV for 95mm model (23-70x mag). (what will the edge sharpness be? probably no flat field?) Weight 1934/2078 grams (I guess that is...

    New scope from Zeiss...

It seems that it's the 85mm "Victory Harpia" on the photos posted by Troub, so I guess the 95mm version will be even longer...perhaps close to 2 feet...:-O "Harpia 85" is written on the body close to the EP-bayonet so I guess it can not be a ATX style construction, but a more conventional body...

3:-) speculating is fun, but not knowing is annoying, please bring on the leaks from the Zeiss head quarters, this is worse than torture...:-O

    New scope from Zeiss...

I lean toward that it's not fine/course focus. But I won't eat any hats... The older fixed 30x EP from Zeiss is also ribbed and the new victory EP looks very short, compared to the old 20-75x zoom. Not sure about patent infringement on the ATX though... but I guess Swarovski buy their glass...

    New scope from Zeiss...

In the first photo it looks longer (compare with the iphone?). My guess is 450+ mm for the body only.

    New scope from Zeiss...

The scope looks quite long, perhaps means better CA control at the edges than some others.
