    Andy's field sketches

I've only ever seen osprey once; A distant(ish) fly-by at Elmley. I can't imagine how good it would be to know of a regular spot for them. Fantastic fieldwork that really shows off your knowledge of the birds of prey. Mike

As ever your fieldwork is astounding. Stags are perfect as they are, your painting style is traditional at its core so the variation on conventions like the centred stag with full rack on view, (Ohh er missus!), is absolutely the right thing to do IMHO. Mike

Knocking back the rock a couple of stops has made a huge difference to th look of this one. It's added depth and freed the flying bird, good call! Mike

Tame - No. I like the 'on the edge' feel, it's almost as though the birds are jostling forwards and the one at the front is going to get pushed off before long. If I had to make a comment I would say that the slightly overcast weather conditions could put some potential buyers off? Whatever...

Fantastic puffin study sheets Andy, plenty of material to work up there. Sounds like a grand ol time on Skomer, shame you had to stay longer than intended! Mike

Shame. It is a bit late for this year though. The RSPB give this advice: http://www.rspb.org.uk/advice/helpingbirds/nestboxes/attracthousemartins/index.asp So you'd have time to organise something for next year. I was watching house martins collecting mud earlier this year, it's a reliable site...

    Andy's field sketches

Absolutely wonderful, filled with life and character. There's nothing like sketching from life is there. I too would love to have martins or swallows near to me, I have to make do with following the progress of the pairs in the toilets at the elmley reserve! Mike

Fabulous account on the blog Andy. Many years ago I was at a falconry display when a tiercel named Henry came to the lure so close to my head that I swear his wingtip grazed my ear! That experience is still clear in my mind ?? years down the line. I met the guy a few years after that and asked...

More superb sketches there, which ones are Joe's? Mike

    Andy's field sketches

I reckon that hits the nail squarely on the head there. Nothing 'bad' in using your own photographic reference. The important thing to realise is that sketching from live subjects gives so much insight into the character and behavior of the birds that when you look at your photos you are able...

I think it was 'Fieldsports' magazine winter 2007, really good 4 page article with some brilliant artwork including partridge over fields. I confess, I was naughty and read the article in the shop! o:D Mike

I couldn't agree more with Tim if I tried. Your field work is always so assured and it appears effortless (I know it's not but it appears to be). I will eagerly await the finished work from the trip. Woody

Beautiful barnies and a nice account of a nice day. Family time is the best and if you can combine it with a bit of birding, sketching and pic taking it just makes it even better! Woody

More fantastic work from you Andy. I was surrounded by pied wags (with the odd yellow mixed in) at the weekend. They are one of my favourite birds and your sketches catch their character absolutely. I'm gonna have to get my sketch pad out for the pieds this weekend now for sure! Woody

Beautiful work Andy. The roller pic tells a graet story and your handling of the flames and the action is masterful. Woody

Really great sketches Andy. I got stuck in a traffic jam on the A40 a couple of years ago, I watched 5-6 red kites through the sunroof for about 20 minutes. The very best traffic jam I've ever been in! Woody

    Andy's field sketches

I guess if I'd read the thread properly, instead of being distracted by the sketches, I would have seen that you said they were on A3! It's interesting that you mention the extra freedom that the larger space allows. I use those Daler Rowney hardback A4s mostly too, (sometimes sold cheap from...
