    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

12 on the garden alone would certainly be a record! I saw very much fewer that day. but there are still plenty around in today's sunny warm weather. Lots of happy folks connecting and clicking away, we even had two pairs mating in the nectar garden at one point! The dames violet is certainly a...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Single Swallowtail seen at Strumpshaw fen this afternoon, 3 days later than their usual emergence date. The cool wind & predicted rain this week may hold them up further, but the next warm sunny day should hopefully see a mass emergence

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Congrats, suitably gripping photo too! Nice find and a 1st for norfolk, not everyday you can say that! To think I was there on Friday hurts just a little...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Unconfirmed report from yesterday of a crimson speckled moth west of lady Anne's drive on twitter at the mo. Looking forward to the photo, just wish it was me on Friday!

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Yep, second brood swallowtails have now been seen, I saw my first on 31st July. A few being seen daily...when conditions allow! Also had a silver washed fritillary on 4th August at strumpshaw but not since. As you say we are now awaiting something possibly even more exciting soon!

If there were a "like" button it would certainly be pushed for that lol

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

I can add 2 painted lady's yesterday to David's already excellent list. It's definitely good for butterflies out there at the moment, now we just need one of those funny torts to complete the set!

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Given that their food plant is willow in wetlands, is a colonisation of the broads and all similar habitat a real possibility? It appears that multiples have been seen so it's also possibly safe to assume there are far more out there that have not been identified/found/reported So a genuine...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Hi James, As far as access goes I'm not sure how ok it is just to go in, I'm guessing it probably will be ok. The Scarce Tort was on show from 11.25 to 12.00 and not seen before or since. The guys that ran the site said they would put it out on pagers etc if it returned, but how often they are...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Even with access I'm not sure it'll be an easy twitch, especially with the cloud cover and cool air this morning, the sun is supposed to break through (but we've all seen forecasts recently go wrong!). I'll be there at 10! Although from the looks of the grid ref and bing maps the car park is in...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Thanks Andy, saves me a job tomorrow! I'll look out for them over the next few weeks

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Nope! Great record, well done. I'll check the database tomorrow and see when the last record was....if it has ever been recorded?!

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Sounds like a hornet, I saw a few yesterday, they are pretty *unmistakable, huge orangey wasp with very audible wings. *pretty unmistakable at this time of the year but there is are a couple of moths and a hoverfly that mimic them later in the year!

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Swallowtails now out at Strumpshaw fen RSPB reserve, call in at the reception to find out where they have been seen each day. As far as I know there are only a few individuals at the moment but given the warm weekend predicted there should hopefully be more emerging over the next few days

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Nice one Ryan, I think you may be correct there, forgot about brick! At least there were some migrant moths to look at today- otherwise a very quiet day off! Thanks!

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

A good nights moth trapping at Strumpshaw last night saw 29 species, including 3 Dark Sward Grass and 2 Four Spotted Footman (a new Nofolk sp for me) and 4 Merveille du jour (excuse my french). I also had the final moth below which I'm not sure about, its probably obvious but I'm a little rusty...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Add to that another single Clouded Yellow at Rockland behind the hide this afternoon. Tons of butterflies along the track at Rockland today, mainly small torts and peacocks but a wider variety also present. As has been said some Swallowtails are still about at Strumpshaw, but by no means easy...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

First I'd heard about it. I checked the sightings board to see Silver Washed Fritillary (female) reported from Sunday. I'd expect that if the obsever ID'd it as being a female it sounds like they know what they are talking about and its not just a comma/speckled wood etc? (I have seen worse...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Hundreds of Small torts in the meadows at Strumpshaw yesterday, each thistle had 'swarms' of them nectaring, quite a sight! Swallowtails still just holding on in the sunny weather, still enough about to almost guarantee sightings in good conditions over the next few days... (disclaimer...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Thanks for the plug! There are still six places left so please phone the Strumpshaw RSPB office to book your place. We will go through 2 mv traps- one from the wood and one from the fen for a bit of variety.

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Not just me then! It appears that moths are really having a tough time this year then, and being an important part of the food chain I'm guessing bats will be having a very poor spring too! I just looked through my records for last yr and considering it was not a great May that year either I...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

The first batch of Swallowtails seem to have emerged from Strumpshaw Fen over the weekend with 1 on Fri 2 on Sat and Sun. Common Blues are usually along Sandy Wall at Strumpshaw, often nectaring/laying on the birds foot trefoil. I'm not sure how many moth-ers view this thread but it seems...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

None yet Pete, I usually say to visitors that the last week of May/1st week of June is usually the emergence period....but this year- who knows!

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Moth traps not looking very productive this week. 3 MV's on last night produced 6 moths of 4 species! Mid-May?? Traps not out tonight due to constant rain predicted. On a better note I had my first common blue butterfly and azure damselfly today.

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Just a quick reminder that I will be opening a moth trap daily (Monday to Sunday) this coming week at Strumpshaw Fen as part of our biodiversity recording week (bioblitz). It is free of charge to come and look at the moths, the trap should be opened between 9 and 10am (dependent on when I...
