No new birds, but finally managed to see an elusive mammal at mine today; was cutting the comfrey patch and putting on the compost heap when noticed a movement on the heap itself; a tiny yellowy-brown thing with a rather long tail; a Harvest Mouse! Seen nests before, but not the actual critter...

And back in the UK, a surprise 59) Wheatear today. Miserable rain this morning, went outside to do some more digging, only to flush a Wheatear of the 4m by 4m patch of freshly dug soil! 2nd patch record.

Think Willow Warbler is always a good bird for gardens where not expected. The other two slightly more expected/unexciting?? Where calls/songs are distinct enough you'd like to count them on a single go, as long as your brain was in gear and you didn't just hear it subconsciously ... But...

This is middle league Ken - the big hitters will obviously get a lot more. Some a lot less. (Look forward to your disposable latex jobbies in the coming weeks ;) ) Should also point out that all birds were seen from roughly the same favoured viewing spot (and a reasonable distance from the...

Rest of day - 32. Serin – 1m landed in tree above 33. White Wagtail 34. House Martin 35. Swift - 1 Didn't quite go to plan, as Big(ish) Days go. Serin was middle of the day, the others late evening, when we were also treated to plenty of Hobby action with a presumed imm. (?) doing multiple...

Nice! Thought I had a pale orangey underparted falcon circling high up the other day but left un'ided unfortunately - in Western France at this time of year presume that would have been too unexpected ...

Garden Bird Day-listing - 4 hours or so in the garden this morning mostly chilling/birding and some good (for me) garden birds, so thought I'd post the list up. It's clear blue skies and warm (25C?) not hot, but seems very little bird movement now. Will have to see if get any additions later on...

    Garden / Yard List 2017

Back in France for a few weeks. Bit of garden birding included a Hoopoe flushed out of the garden in the morning. The evening meal outside and hanging around outside provided a rufous-morph Booted Eagle circling over the woods (2nd this year, usually annual), with a surprise Red-rumped Swallow...

Maybe you're using the wrong kind of grill? Sand Martins are a bit like Rooks - you almost never/never see them randomly flying over it seems. Don't think I've ever had Sand Martin on any garden list.

Been down in France the last few weeks. Completely unexpected garden tick an hour or two back - had to leave the house briefly to hear a clear 'whip wi whip' as something flushed from the edge of the drive, and then further away into the distance. Common Quail, been a while since heard one anywhere.

    Garden / Yard List 2017

There are no rules ... ;) If you own the property ... thinking about it, don't think anyone would get banned if they posted up a list of birds seen when visiting a friends garden?

It should be you, on the basis of potential numbers of different migrant species. It is kinda fun to have different levels of competition - mid, high or low.

Had my own nice surprise this midday - popped out it the warm sunshine (that was one surprise in itself still) to hear a Cuckoo 'cuckooing' as it went north. At least I assume it was just passing through - there is habitat up that way. So .. 57) Garden Warber 58) Cuckoo (h)
