AMS, Gastroenteritis and birding in Ethiopia

Just in case anybody wanted to read the final part, it can be found here. Should anybody be visiting Ethiopia and want any information, drop me a DM and I'll help if I can.

Geladas Apologies for the belated reply, hoping to complete the final entry in the coming days. A few images of the Gelada baboons (and one rather special raptor), absolutely fantastic creatures!

The penultimate instalment (I think) to help pass those long hours at work before the festive break! 26th November - Hawassa to Addis Ababa The following morning saw up departing Hawassa at 6am, and despite struggling to find a bajaj to take us to the bus station, we made it onto one of the...

25th November - Hawassa Another day, and another early morning. We’d had such a welcome break in the Rift Valley (particularly enjoying the novelty of a hot shower!) that we’d decided to spend an additional night in Hawassa, allowing another full day, and the possibility of a last roll of the...

Thanks both, I suspect it must be in that case - we certainly saw individuals which were a dead ringer for the one in your photo - very similar to Patas monkey if memory serves me correctly? I'll have a look and see if any detail can be seen on any of the other shots, but I don't hold out much hope!

Thanks for all the well wishes, and I find the varying accounts of high altitude birding to be somewhat comforting - perhaps I will one day make it to Nepal/Peru/Ecuador after all. It seems that a greater period of acclimatisation is the key! Anyways, back to Ethiopia... 24th November -...

Go on then, one last segment for the time being... 23rd November - travel day (Rira to Hawassa) The day began with a very quick walk around the hotel grounds, specifically trying to relocate the previous evenings calling owl. Alas, time was short and save for some really good views of...

Thanks for the kind comments, hopefully will do some more in the coming days - my patch has been somewhat neglected so I had better head down soon and see what I've been missing! Jurek (or anybody else), if you want any specific info such as grid refs, feel free to drop me a DM and I'll do my...

22nd November - Rira - Sanetti - Goba The day began with a pre-breakfast amble around the grounds of our accomodation at Rira Eco lodge, a rather grand title for a cluster of mud huts with no electricity or running water… There were quite a few birds in the area, with Tacazze sunbird...

Hi Chris, thanks for the kind words, I will do in future posts- admittedly I was being a bit lazy. Andy is correct, with the eagle being Steppe (long gape line and barring on the flight feathers) though I think the francolin is Chestnut naped rather than Moorland - happy to be corrected of...

21st November Dinsho - Sanetti - Harenna Another early start and another early morning wander around the forest surrounding Dinsho. Abyssinian catbird finally gave itself up and I managed a good 10 second view of the entire bird, red undertail coverts, white supercilium and all. Typically the...

Thanks Andy. We naively thought that a few days in Addis, followed by a day in Dinsho would be sufficient to acclimatise - I haven't really been anywhere as mountainous and at a similar altitude to Ethiopia before (I think Oukaïmeden at 2600 was my previous highest) and as a result hadn't...

No worries Jan! It may be worth checking out Uganda, as there are a few parks there where you can explore (not on foot sadly) without a guide. Also Costa Rica/Panama can largely be done without the intervention of any guide if you wish, though there will be quite a few other people in the...

Jan, a guide is mandatory in order to enter the NP, however, a bird guide is not. With the exception of the assistance of one of the rangers to locate the owls, this trip was independent (like all my trips) as in the birds recorded were as a result of my field craft, knowledge and experience. I...

AMS, Gastroenteritis and birding in Ethiopia

19th November (Sodota plain to Dinsho) I awoke around midnight, and although feeling a bit dizzy and tired, I could hear the unmistakable single low hoot of Greyish eagle owl. I listened to the bird calling for a while, and fell back into an uneasy sleep. A few hours later I awoke with a start...

Thanks Pete, Mike and Jos, I'm glad you are enjoying it so far. 18th November (Dinsho to Sodota plain) Following an interesting night of listening to both Abyssinian Long eared and African wood owl’s, in which a trip to the toilet was punctuated by the very close calls of Spotted hyena, the...

15th November (arrival in Addis Ababa) A day flight to Addis Ababa via Frankfurt meant that we did not arrive in Ethiopia until the evening, by which time darkness had fallen. We arrived at our hotel sometime after 8pm, and whilst soaking in the sights, sounds and smells of the city from the...

I'll try to keep this as clean as possible... We've just returned from a fantastic 2 weeks in Ethiopia (covering Bale Mountains, Awassa and Central highlands). The following will give an overview as well as a blow by blow account of each day, though it may take me a number of weeks to finish...
