Not hoody I'm afraid. Probably just a scruffy youngster, but may contain some hooded genes Rob

Had a long gap without smew there (or anything much else for that matter). I think this bird is on at least its 3rd winter (despite Birdguides saying it is a first winter - it was just a slightly delayed moult). There were two drakes one year. If only the access road wasn't in such a state (and...

Waxwing crap being messy stuff, they're probably hanging round for a laugh... Rob

I gather it showed very well again yesterday but was rather more elusive when Daniel and I saw it in the afternoon. Nice views of the red-crested pochard at Kilconquhar though. Rob

High tide best for whimbrel! Twas my report from Ruddons yesterday when it was calm enough to see grebes (though it could still have been better). Rob

Yes, it is not terribly reliable though. Best bet is high tide when it roosts on what becomes an island with the curlews etc. It must be knocking on a bit by now (one winter there were 2)! Rob

As Ruddons Point WeBS counter I know only too well that it's terrible in a strong wind! The brents were in the field at Kincaple yesterday afternoon btw. Rob

Last Sunday (19th) the brents were in the field where the swans feed opposite the Kincaple turning. Worth a check as you are passing. Rob

Suspect the Cuilc froze over. I think it has most recently been reported from Loch Faskally. If there is a big thaw then it will probably reappear on the Cuilc. Hope this helps. Rob

Hi Jonathan, I led an SOC trip to Glen Quaich last month. We had an extraordinary black pheasant above Loch Freuchie - bizarre looking thing. We had much closer black grouse than yours, plus a good array of raptors. Rob

British record was actually in Lothian at Gosford Bay: 10 on 13th April 1989 (per Birds of Scotland). Most I have seen at Ruddons is probably 5 (same in St Andrews Bay). Rob

We also went to Scone yesterday, having missed the bash (Daniel had the dreaded winter vomiting bug). Astonishing numbers of hawfinches around the back entrance, mostly up in tall trees but also coming down to feed in the yews. We saw at least 35 but there could have been more than 50! Rob

Self-found (or not) Having got back from a conference in Spain about midnight I took myself off to Fife Ness mid-afternoon hoping to time it as the rain cleared. I was slightly early(!), but it dried up before long. I began at Fife Ness Muir and picked up a few crests and plenty of...

Had 2.5h seawatching from Fife Ness yesterday afternoon. Hordes of birds - especially fulmars - also around 500 manx shearwaters, 29 sooty shearwaters, a couple of black terns, a juv. little gull, 5 arctic skuas, 4 bonxies ... The highlight came just as ! was leaving when Ken Shaw screeched...
