    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

2 Purple Hairstreak were in the oak outside Zaks in Norwich yesterday but no White-letter. Has anyone had any of these here or elsewhere recently? Cheers, Jim.

Photos on Wheatfen Facebook page of Silver-washed Fritillary from yesterday. Not so far for me to go for them now! Last person to record one on the reserve was Ted himself in 1940 https://www.facebook.com/groups/108886053969/ Cheers, Jim.

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

4 Species of Butterfly yesterday, and what a day it was. In my garden, many Small Torts and Brimstones (the latter mainly through rather than resting) and an afternoon walk at Wood's End added Peacock and Comma to the list. Cheers, Jim.

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

The Butterfly season kicked off for me today, in the garden at Surlingham. 3 probable Small Tort were a little windswept, but a male Brimstone was unmistakeable! Cheers, Jim.

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Guys, many thanks to all who have provided details both here and via PM. The forum at its best. Went this afternoon meeting Chrisbish there, who had already seen a Clouded Yellow! No such luck for me though, although conditions were at times overcast and breezy. I was pleased to see so many...

Thanks Mister M, exactly what I needed to know. Busy today but I will certainly investigate within the next few days. Thanks for taking the time. Cheers, Jim.

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Glad to hear you are back with us Tideliner. Could anyone please provide directions to Queen's Hills? I am particularly interested in seeing Clouded Yellow and the Small Red-eyed Damsels. Cheers, Jim.

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Hi HD, would the Clouded Yellows at Queen's Hills be an accidental introduction, or migrants? Either way I would like to see them, is the area accessible? Has anyone had any luck with Purple and/or White Letter Hairstreak at Zaks's, Mousehold Heath? I have been for a jog down there a couple of...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Well spotted John- you caught the perp'. I now post this in the correct thread! Although not in Norfolk, I thought Forumites may like to know that 100's of Purple Emperor Butterflies are on the wing in Northants woods. I would post the site name, but not too sure if this is sensitive although...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Nice work, always nice to get that first of the year confirmed. Shed loads of Small Tortoiseshell on the wing over the last couple of days. I hope others are noticing an increase too? Meadow Browns and Ringlets not far behind in terms of most prevalent. I recorded my first Large Skippers of...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Small Heath- not seen many of those this year, just one, infact! I turned up at Wheatfen today for a Sunday afternoon stroll and happened upon their busiest day of the year, Swallowtail day. Said Butterfly performed, I saw 3 or 4 including one at rest. Someone had found a fresh looking Elephant...

Hi Chris. I certainly recognised this instantly, but couldn't put a name to it. Thank goodness for the web; I think this is a Mint Moth. Jim.

Missed that one Chris! I'm sure he won't mind me posting, Shaky09 sent me a photo of a Small Copper he saw today, I presume somewhere near Norwich. Cheers, Jim.

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Haven't seen one yet this year, but did have one in roughly the same spot last year. Seemingly hard to pin down, perhaps this is a good spot. Cheers , Jim.

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Ah ok, many thanks. I think this year I am looking at our Butterflies more closely than ever before, still on a learning curve when it comes to the finer points. I had seen loads of Meadow Browns up to this individual, so to know they can appear in such a posture is good to know. First instinct...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Hi Kieran, that was my first thought. Would you say this is a washed out individual, lacking the usual 'eye' markings? Jim.

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Managed my best Big Butterfly count so far today at a site near Poringland. Meadow Brown, Ringlet, Comma, Gatekeeper, Large White, Small White, Essex Skipper, Large Skipper and one individual that has thrown me! I would appreciate it if folk could have a look on my blog where I have posted the...

Some lovely shots there. I observed my first ever Purple Emperors in Hertforshire only yesterday, I won't forget them in a hurry! Pictures on me blog, although you really need to see these things to appreciate the behaviour. Cheers, Jim.

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Must have been at least 3 Silver-washed Frits at Holt CP this afternoon, we were treated to some excellent in-your-face fly-by views! They just would not settle though, only one gave itself up for a second or two. Still, a new Butterfly for me and in Norfolk too! Around 3 White Admirals also...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

The barky dog followed me round for a bit! I tried to lose him, but he was too cunning by half. Nowhere to hide on those long stretches either! Funny you mentioned Red Deer; some large tracks in the mud near the staithe. Perhaps I will just keep walking next time! I love these isolated spots...

    Norfolk Butterflies and Moths

Completed my first Big Butterfly Count this afternoon, at Catfield Fen. I wonder if any of the forum members are familiar with this site? This was my first visit, and whilst I 'found' the right spot, there was no map or marked trail to follow. Did I get it right? From Catfield village, I headed...
