eBird and Birding on the move

Just to add - there is a whole group of low density species, which have few territories and large areas of seemingly identical habitat in between are unoccupied. There an exact information is necessary to find them - something which Ebird does not easily provide.

eBird and Birding on the move

I always though that Ebird has such a feature because it started as a database of bird census plots and sites. It then expanded for general birders and is able to gather lots of data this way, but this feature remained hard coded. Now, Ebird already gathers exact coordinates and reliance on...

eBird and Birding on the move

This is not exact but works on ornitho.ch and observation. by default. Orders of magnitude better than the current ebird.

eBird and Birding on the move

I fully agree. For birders trying to re-find a bird, the Ebird system of huge hotspots, trail and roads is pain to use. Additionally, most of the past and current Ebird data using hotspots will become useless within few years time for scientific purposes, too. Paths, trails and hotspots change...

eBird and Birding on the move

Do you realize there is lots known about bird distribution outside Ebird?

eBird and Birding on the move

I actually see Not, it is a common mistake. Small data usually gives more accurate picture than large but skewed data, unless the bias is understood and corrected. I perhaps really should write more about it, because Ebird and field biologists are happily unaware of many problems of working...

eBird and Birding on the move

I did not even know such a thing existed? is there a way to search it? Frankly, “the official list of species” is not scientific, because science, essentially, accepts diversity and change of opinions. In case of mammals, hypothetically, it is enough to mark records as unreviewed...

eBird and Birding on the move

If, hypothetically, they decide to be compatible with other global databases, they can simply follow their system for non-birds. The amount of work would actually decrease. In exchange, they could make publications like comparing bird diversity with mammals, plants, butterflies, or -...

eBird and Birding on the move

I honestly hope that ebird changes to using exact coordinates of a sighting as a default. Tracks are subjective, inexact and confusing, and pointless wherever cars are not used as the main birding medium. They will also cause problems in future, when roads and their surroundings will change...
