    Laos - A country with life but no song.

    I visited China in 1988 and had the same impression, particularly marked after spending time in India in the early '80s where birds were plentiful. Strangely the only species I saw more of were hen harriers - I remember quite a few ringtails hunting over rice paddies between Dali and Erhai Lake...
